In Preci, hiking trails and cultural history shape the travel experience. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can use these themes as a starting point and consider whether you want to focus mainly on hiking, architecture, or the history of surgery. Specific information about distance and walking time can help you estimate how much time to set aside for your excursions.

Hiking trails and their different timeframes

The Sentiero Natura di Preci is 3.7 kilometers long, with a stated walking time of two hours. It is classified as T (Tourist). The trail follows in the footsteps of hermits, monks, and heretics who chose these secluded, peaceful places for an ascetic life. In this way, the route connects with the spiritual history of these remote places.

A longer loop is “La Natura Sulla Porta Di Casa”: it runs from Preci via Sacovescio and Collescille, then back to Preci. The stated distance is 13.4 kilometers, with a walking time of four hours and ten minutes; it is classified as E (Hiking Trail). Compared with the Sentiero Natura, the route is more than three times as long and the walking time is more than twice as long. The classifications also differ. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

If you’re interested in road cycling, a route from Norcia to Castelluccio goes via Forca di Gualdo. It initially climbs toward Forca d’Ancarano and then descends toward Preci. The cycling route and the two hiking trails therefore offer different travel options, though the same time information is not available for all of them.

The landscape around Preci

The area of Preci lies within Monti Sibillini National Park. The municipality includes valuable Natura 2000 habitats: the Monti Sibillini Special Protection Area for birds, as well as the Sites of Community Importance Valle Campiano and Valnerina. These geographical features give the landscape an important role alongside the area’s architectural and local history.

Valle Castoriana is also shaped by its natural environment. An extraordinary variety of wild orchids can be found along its extensive network of hiking trails. The orchids are specifically associated with the valley and its trail network. When planning your trip, you can distinguish these landscape features from the churches and historic buildings that form the cultural focus.

Churches, castle, and architectural history

The historic center of Preci includes a 14th-century castle that has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The Church of Santa Caterina features a Gothic portal alongside Romanesque decorative elements on its façade. The Museo della scuola chirurgica preciana is housed in the former Church of Santa Caterina. The museum’s history and the building’s architecture thus point to two distinct aspects of the town.

The Church of Santa Maria preserves heavily fragmented frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. Below Preci, at Campiano, stands the Church of Madonna della Peschiera, built in 1600. A spring beside it feeds basins that were used for trout farming from the 17th century onward. The basins’ historical use is part of the area’s history; by itself, it says nothing about activities available to visitors today.

The Surgical School and Sant’Eutizio

From the 10th to the 16th century, the Scuola Chirurgica Preciana trained lay surgeons whose skills were sought throughout Europe. Its origins can be traced to the Benedictine monks of Sant’Eutizio Abbey, who practiced and taught medicine in the 10th century. Surgeons from Preci became known throughout Europe for treating cataracts and performing hernia operations. This timeline shows that the town’s medical tradition spanned several centuries and focused on specific fields.

The origins of the Benedictine Abbey of Sant’Eutizio date back to the 5th century. Its abbey church was rebuilt in the Romanesque style between the 12th and 13th centuries. Above the Romanesque portal is a lunette bearing an inscription dated 1190. The abbey church therefore brings together different historical layers: the abbey’s early origins, its later reconstruction, and the dated inscription.
