Gaglietole: Church Art, History and the Puglia Valley
Accommodation in Gaglietole
Gaglietole combines a hillside setting with church art, traces of history and views of the Puglia Valley. For getting there, Strada del Puglia is a useful landmark: the village can be reached via this road, which connects Collepepe with Foligno. Visitors choosing Gaglietole for a stay will find different ways to explore the village’s history, from medieval fortifications to church art from later centuries.
Church Art and Architectural History
Two works of art with different dates are found in the parish church of San Cristoforo. A fresco depicting the Madonna and Child dates from the second half of the 14th century. The altarpiece showing the Last Supper and Saints Christopher and Sebastian was painted by Polinori around 1629. Their different dates make the church interesting to travelers who are interested in sacred art and its motifs.
The architectural history of San Cristoforo also points to Gaglietole Castle: the church was built inside its former keep. The castle gate is located in a large round tower. This makes it possible to consider religious art and the history of medieval fortifications as two connected themes. Another church, Madonna del Puglia, stands beside the village cemetery. Madonna delle Grazie is another noteworthy place along Strada del Puglia. Its Renaissance portal is flanked by two windows. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance.
Castle, Valley and Landscape
Gaglietole Castle was recorded as early as 1299, with 52 households, or so-called hearths. In the Middle Ages, Gaglietole also served a strategic function: the village acted as a natural outpost against attempts to occupy the area beyond the Puglia River. This history is closely connected to the village’s location, and does not require following any particular walking route.
Views of the Puglia Valley are part of the character of the hillside setting. The Cannara–Collazzone–Cannara route offers a different perspective on the landscape: after Gaglietole, it follows Strada Gaglietolese, a country road between olive trees and vineyards. The valley views and the roadside scenery, lined with olive trees and vines, offer different impressions of the surrounding area. Tiro a Volo Piancardato is located at Via Piancardato 73 in Gaglietole di Collazzone and stretches along the Torrente Puglia over about 20 hectares.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
Gaglietole in Festa takes place over several evenings every summer. The program includes Umbrian dishes, grilled food, live music and themed evenings. The traditional San Cristoforo “Over 40” soccer tournament is also part of the festival: a small-sided tournament on the village sports field. Festival dates vary from year to year; if you want to plan your trip around the program, check the dates for the relevant year.
The annual tradition also includes a procession in honor of Saint Christopher on July 25, involving the Gaglietole community. If you want to travel specifically for it, check the current schedule in advance. A public program from 2023 offers another snapshot of regional food culture, tied to a specific time: it included a cooking class where typical regional recipes were prepared in the village’s communal oven. This is an example from that year, not a claim that the activity is still offered regularly.
