Corciano: Walls, Art and Museums
Accommodation in Corciano
A Stay Amid Local History and Nature
Corciano combines a historic center with a medieval layout and the neighboring Monte Malbe nature area. This gives you two distinct focuses to choose from as you plan your trip: churches, art and collections in town, or trails and excursions in the natural area. Monte Malbe borders Corciano and is used for trails and excursions. When looking for a hotel in Corciano, it helps to consider in advance which of these focuses matters more for your stay.
Medieval Center and Works of Art
The historic center is enclosed by high walls. Its medieval layout includes narrow streets and stairways, as well as palaces, towers, gardens, churches and bell towers. The variety is also evident in Piazza Coragino, where there is a 16th-century fountain. Together, these architectural features create a townscape that is not limited to a single monument.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is in an urban setting near the main square and dates back to the 13th century. The church houses two works from different periods: Perugino’s altarpiece of the Assumption, from 1513, and Benedetto Bonfigli’s Gonfalone della Peste, from 1472. The Torrione di Porta Santa Maria adds another perspective on the village’s history. Built as a defensive structure in 1482, it has been used as an exhibition space since 2015. It comprises three small rooms: the Sala dei Massari, Sala delle Bertesche and Sala della Chiave.
Museums on Archaeology and Everyday Life
The Antiquarium is divided into sections on paleontology, prehistory and early history, and classical archaeology. The paleontology section displays ammonite fossils from Migiana dating to the Lower Jurassic, and remains of Quaternary mammals from Ellera dating to the Lower Pleistocene. The classical archaeology collection includes reconstructions of two princely chariots. The chariots were found in April 1812 at Castel San Mariano, in a tomb dating to the 6th century BC. The fossils, early history and classical archaeology offer different perspectives on the past at the Antiquarium.
The Museo della Pievania is located in the Church of San Cristoforo in the historic center and documents the religious life of the local community. The Museo della Casa Contadina focuses on rural life in Corciano before industrialization. It illustrates this subject through four typical rooms. In the cellar or workshop, visitors can see farming equipment and a restored, functioning loom. In this way, the religious history of the community and its former rural way of life are presented side by side as distinct museum themes.
More Destinations and Visitor Information
Just outside the village walls is the Chiesa Museo San Francesco, dating to the late 13th century. The scale model in the Infopoint offers a different view of the town: it shows Corciano at a scale of 1:100 and was made by local artisans between 2006 and 2011. The church, museum and model each offer a different perspective—from a building outside the walls to a representation of the village as a whole.
Please note a specific condition for visiting Sant’Agostino: the church and monastery are closed; visits are possible only by prior reservation. When planning your trip, you can consider this separately from your chosen focus on local history, collections or trails in neighboring Monte Malbe.
