Ilci offers several specific highlights to consider when planning a trip: the architecture of the Castello, the history of the old parish church of San Giovanni, prehistoric archaeological sites and festivals associated with different periods. The landscape is also part of the Castello’s character: it stands on a ridge overlooking the Tiber Valley and the hills of the Monti Martani. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ilci, the town’s history, festival traditions or a cycling tour can shape your stay.

Castello and landscape

The Castello di Ilci retains its medieval layout, and the remains of older structures are well preserved. At the same time, the complex shows elements of a Roman fortification plan, including a central cardo and side streets arranged in a herringbone pattern. The cardo is the central axis of the street layout, while the side streets form a different pattern. The Castello therefore displays both medieval and Roman influences, without reducing the complex to a single period.

Its position on the ridge adds a landscape perspective to its architectural history: views extend over the Tiber Valley and the hills of the Monti Martani. If you’re interested in architectural history and landscape, you’ll find two distinct ways of seeing the same place here.

Church and historical traces

The old parish church of Ilci is dedicated to San Giovanni and has been mentioned since the 14th century. The area’s prehistory is also part of its historical story: prehistoric archaeological sites have been recorded in the Ilci area between the River Tiber and the Puglia stream. This extends the historical timeframe beyond the medieval and Roman elements of the Castello.

A medieval document cited by the city of Todi in March 2023 mentions two plots of land in the present-day locations of Ilci and Cascisci. This reference to plots of land and place names adds another historical perspective alongside the architectural and church history.

Festivals and seasonal experiences

The traditional Pranzo di Sant’Antonio in Ilci is held every year. It includes the blessing of animals, followed by a communal lunch. It takes place at a different time from a specific event in the programme for the feast of the patron saint, San Pancrazio: the official programme for 16 May 2026 listed the theatre performance “I paci del teatro” at 9:00 p.m. in the parish multipurpose square.

A report dated 18 January 2026 also described a Christmas programme from the preceding Christmas season. It included traditional Christmas tastings and FAI-guided visits exploring the history of the town and its church. These examples relate to different periods: the Pranzo is described as an annual tradition, while the theatre performance and Christmas programme relate to specific past occasions. If you’d like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for your visit.

Getting there and cycling

On 29 August 2026, the RFI live passenger information board listed the station “ILCI-PIAN DEI MORI”. If this station is part of your travel plans, check the timetable before departing.

For cyclists, the “Todi anello per la gravel” route is a specific way to explore Ilci: it climbs towards the town and was uploaded in May 2024. If you plan to ride the route, check its course and conditions before setting off, as they may change.
