Several historical threads converge at Ranciano: a Roman production site, medieval traces and an event from the Second World War. A connecting route of the Via Romea Germanica from Castiglione del Lago to Paciano also passes through Ranciano. This means two distinct points are relevant to planning your trip: the history of the area and the course of a specific route, along with its landscape.

Archaeological traces from different periods

A medieval lime kiln was uncovered during excavations in Ranciano in 2022. It is thought to date from shortly after 1252 AD. A magnetometry survey carried out in November 2021 indicated at least four kilns. It also suggested the presence of a large structure, possibly a workshop and/or a storage building. Together with the Roman production site near Ranciano, this creates a timeline extending from Roman production into the Middle Ages.

The finds also differ in material and subject. A bronze statuette of Eros holding a sword was discovered in Ranciano; it is part of the collection at the new Archaeological Museum in Castiglione del Lago. Another find is a carnelian engraved with a goatherd. The stone was bevelled so it could be set in a ring mount. Thus, a bronze figure and a worked gemstone sit side by side: the figure and sword define the statuette’s subject, while the carnelian is distinguished by its engraving and its shape, intended for a ring.

Settlement history and a historical connection

Ranciano developed as one of the small settlements that grew out of farmhouses around the former Benedictine Abbey of Badia. This origin is distinct from the Roman production site and the medieval archaeological traces: it describes how the small settlement came about, while the finds reveal further historical contexts.

Another historical connection concerns the Second World War: on 24 June, units of the London Irish Rifles, the Inniskilling Fusiliers, also known as the “Skins,” and the Royal Irish Fusiliers, known as the “Faughs,” attacked German troops in the hamlet of Ranciano.

The Via Romea Germanica and the landscape

The connecting route of the Via Romea Germanica from Castiglione del Lago to Paciano passes through Ranciano and then through Pescia and Sanfatucchio. This section runs along the ridge between Lago di Chiusi and Lake Trasimeno, through gently rolling, fully cultivated hills dotted with vineyards. The route can therefore be understood both by its sequence of places and by the character of the landscape. If you include the route in your plans, check the local waymarking before your trip.

Getting there and finding hotels

Castiglione del Lago railway station is one possible arrival point, with onward travel by car. If you choose this way of arriving, check current connections before your trip. This lets you tailor your search to your own travel plans.
