Sigillo: Medieval Village and Monte Cucco
Accommodation in Sigillo
Sigillo preserves the character of a medieval village, with houses of pink stone standing close together. The Sigillo area lies within Parco del Monte Cucco.
Building History and Churches
Palazzo Comunale dates back to the 12th century. Chiesa di SantāAgostino was built between 1788 and 1791 on the foundations of the earlier church of Santa Caterina. The surviving medieval crypt of Santa Caterina was restored and converted into a cultural center. Different periods of construction meet here: the crypt preserves a medieval connection, while SantāAgostino was built on the earlier site.
Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta also brings together various cultural and historical details. It is a 12th-century Romanesque sanctuary and has a bell dating from 1250, as well as a fresco by the painter Matteo da Gualdo dated 1484. Chiesa di SantāAndrea houses an organ made in 1793 by the Venetian organ builder Gaetano Callido. It is considered the first and only surviving work by this organ builder in Umbria. Chiesa di SantāAnna was built in the mid-15th century on the ancient Via Flaminia.
Ponte Spiano is also part of the historical context of the ancient Via Flaminia. It lies just outside Sigillo and made it possible to cross the Fonturci stream there. The buildings and bridge thus highlight different aspects: church architecture, dated artworks, organ building, and an earlier crossing over a watercourse.
Museums: Paleontology and Painting
The āBrascugliā Paleontological Museum houses fossils and virtual displays on the paleontology of the Monte Cucco area and the adjacent geological layers. The āAnton Pietro Valenteā Museum contains part of a collection of 175 paintings donated to Sigillo by the painter, sculptor, and scenographer Anton Pietro Valente (1896ā1973). The museums focus on different subjects: one is dedicated to fossils and the history of the Earth, while the other features a painting collection. If you would like to include one of the museums in your visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
Free Flight, Climbing, and Bouldering
Monte Cucco and Sigillo are suitable for free flight thanks to favorable orographic and meteorological conditions. Suitability depends on the weather, so weather conditions are part of the practical planning for this activity. In 2017, two facilities for sport climbing and bouldering were inaugurated in Sigillo, in Parco del Monte Cucco. If you are planning to climb or boulder, check the current availability for use in advance.
Rock Formations and Landscapes in Parco del Monte Cucco
The temporary spring of delle Lecce is a horizontal fissure in a limestone wall. When it rains, a powerful, fan-shaped jet of water emerges from it. The natural rock wall of delle Lecce is a rock escarpment up to 70 meters high that seems to seal off the valley. The Orto della Cicuta differs from these as a largely level natural balcony high above the valley, overlooking it. Here, a rain-dependent water phenomenon, a striking rock formation, and an elevated view of the valley sit side by side.
The natural setting of Parco del Monte Cucco includes centuries-old beech trees, maples, holm oaks, chestnuts, yews, and hornbeams.
