Among the things that can shape a stay in Bettona are art and archaeology, historic religious buildings, and routes through the landscape. A local olive oil tradition and a recurring summer tradition are also among the town’s distinctive features described here. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to think in advance about whether you would like to include cultural sites, walking routes or nature more prominently in your travel plans.

Museum and art in Bettona

The Museo della CittĂ  di Bettona is located in Piazza Cavour and is housed in the Palazzo del PodestĂ  and Palazzo Biancalana. Its collection includes an archaeological section and a painting section. Notable works include pieces by Perugino, El Greco, Dono Doni and Canova. The two sections give the museum a clear thematic structure: archaeology and painting sit side by side here.

The museum organizes guided tours for groups, as well as individual and themed visits, educational workshops and activities for families. As visitor programs may change, check the latest program details before your trip.

Churches, monastery and walls

The Gothic chapel of Santa Rita is the only surviving part of the ancient Roman church. The Oratorio di S. Andrea contains a series of paintings from the Giotto school, dating from 1394 and depicting the Passion of Christ. The church of San Crispolto was built in the 8th century by monks to house the relics of the patron saint. Santa Maria Maggiore is a 13th-century church in the historic center of Bettona and the most important church in the Bettona area.

The former 13th-century monastery of San Crispolto includes a cloister, a chapter house and the Cenacolo. A restored fresco is located on the back wall of the refectory. If you would like to include the monastery rooms in your plans, check access locally.

The route of Bettona’s Etruscan walls is about one kilometer long. Where visible, the walls are made of dressed blocks of local sandstone. This is distinct from the 1.5-kilometer panoramic path that runs alongside the walls and offers views of the Valle Umbra. The lengths therefore refer to different things: about one kilometer for the wall route and 1.5 kilometers for the path. This distinction is useful when planning a visit to the historic walls and the walking route.

Walking routes and landscape

The Bettona–Collemancio trekking route starts in Bettona’s central square, near the church, town hall and museum. It passes through olive groves and woods, where the predominant trees and plants are holm oaks, strawberry trees, heather, Turkey oaks and maples. This route is characterized by its starting point and the vegetation described, while the panoramic path is characterized by its length and views of the Valle Umbra.

Part of the Bettona area is designated a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and included in the Natura 2000 network. In the Acque Minerali area, there are waterfalls and streams amid dense vegetation. If you plan to visit, check trail conditions locally.

Olive oil and a summer tradition

Frantoio Decimi is located in the municipality of Bettona. The mill has a tasting room dedicated to the sensory tasting of high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Check the latest booking details in advance if you would like to include this in your plans.
