Discover Castel Rigone through its history, culture and landscape. The Santuario Maria Santissima dei Miracoli, the CAI M03 hiking trail and events such as the Festa dei Barbari each offer a different perspective. At 673 metres above sea level, the town offers views across the lake basin below and towards Perugia and as far as Assisi.

History between the sanctuary and local tradition

The Santuario Maria Santissima dei Miracoli was built in 1494 with the support of the city of Perugia as a place of protection from the plague. At the request of Pope Alexander VI, it was dedicated to Maria Santissima dei Miracoli. Its year of construction, purpose as a place of protection and dedication give the sanctuary a special place in the town’s history.

According to tradition, Castel Rigone’s origins date back to 543 AD. At that time, the Ostrogoth lieutenant Arrigo is said to have established a base there for soldiers involved in the siege of Perugia. This account of the town’s origins links it to a specific person and a historical conflict.

The town’s theatrical history also has a specific date: in 1905, it was decided to build the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi as a suitable venue for music and other artistic activities. Together with the sanctuary and the account of the town’s origins, this decision illustrates different facets of its history.

Landscape, hiking trail and views

The CAI M03 hiking trail leads from Castel Rigone to the Torre di Fiume. It first passes pastures and scrubland, then continues through forests of downy oaks and European hornbeams. The sequence of open spaces and two named tree species gives the trail a distinctive landscape character.

North of Castel Rigone lies the SIC IT5210016 Boschi di Castel Rigone. The area is located in the municipalities of Passignano sul Trasimeno and Umbertide, northeast of Lake Trasimeno. This geographical context adds another perspective on the landscape around the town to the specific trail description.

The view also helps put Castel Rigone in context: at 673 metres above sea level, you can see across the lake basin below and towards Perugia and as far as Assisi. The basin’s lower elevation and the more distant views are both part of the panorama.

For a different way to explore, there is a free historical and art-historical tour with multilingual QR codes. If you would like to take the tour, check in advance whether the QR codes are available on site.

Cultural events and different experiences

During the Festa dei Barbari, Castel Rigone is transformed within its historic walls into a Barbarian village, where numerous artisans and merchants are at work. Visitors can rent costumes and register to take part in the Sunday historical costume parade, “La Calata dei Barbari”. If you plan to attend the parade, check the event dates and registration options in advance.

The Festival internazionale Giovani concertisti was founded in Castel Rigone in 1998 and is dedicated entirely to young concert musicians from Italy and many other parts of the world. The two cultural events have different focuses: the festival centres on young concert musicians, while the Festa features the costume parade, as well as crafts and trade in a historic setting.

Getting there by car

The fastest road route to Castel Rigone is by car via the Strada Provinciale 142 from Passignano sul Trasimeno. As road conditions and restrictions may change, it is a good idea to check the latest situation before setting off.
