Discover Colle Calzolaro
Accommodation in Colle Calzolaro
Colle Calzolaro has two clear travel connections: hiking trails that reach or pass through the village, and the history of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista. Destinations in Panicale and Tavernelle add to the picture with a sanctuary and a water park, respectively.
Hiking routes and landscape
One described hiking trail climbs from the valley floor of Tavernelle through the rural village of Colle Calzolaro. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
Colle Calzolaro lies at kilometre 7.1 on a described circular hiking route from Panicale. The route description mentions views of Lago di Pietrafitta, the central Tiber Valley, Monte Subasio and the Apennines; visibility depends on the weather. Another route is called “Tavernelle-Colle Calzolaro-Mongiovino Vecchio e ritorno” and is described as a circular hiking trail. A route description from March 2021 characterises it as an easy morning hike with views of Valnestore. The details emphasise different aspects: the Panicale route specifies the kilometre marker and weather-dependent views, while the Tavernelle route notes the time of day and its described character. The route types also differ: one hiking trail climbs through the village, while the Panicale and Tavernelle routes are described as circular walks. For planning, you can compare the climb through Colle Calzolaro with two circular routes.
Church and art history
The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista is located in Colle Calzolaro, Panicale. It is documented as early as the 15th century. The church once housed the fresco “Cristo in pietà” by Masolino da Panicale, created around 1424.
Another religious destination is in Panicale: the Santuario della Madonna di Mongiovino. It is considered a popular pilgrimage destination and is now also a stop for hiking tourism. Works by Fiammingo, Pomarancio and Lombardelli are associated with the sanctuary. Here, pilgrimage traditions and hiking tourism sit alongside the connections to these artists.
Green space and water slide in Tavernelle
Parco Acquatico di Tavernelle includes a green space of around 30,000 m². It features an English lawn, a pine grove, picnic areas, shaded areas and a children’s play area. This gives the park a different focus from the hiking trails described above: green spaces and places to take a break are central to the setting.
The facilities also include the Twister water slide. It consists of two interwoven enclosed tubes and is around 50 metres long. If you plan to visit the park, check the current operating conditions before your visit. This makes it easy to treat the water park as a separate activity from a hike or a cultural-history visit.
