Suvereto is a medieval village still surrounded by walls. Churches, a cloister, and the Rocca Aldobrandesca offer a glimpse of the town’s historic character. Trails through valleys and the wider region also provide different options for planning a trip. Which of these aspects interests you most can help set the focus for your stay.

Medieval Buildings and Collections

The origins of the Church of San Giusto date back to between the 9th and 12th centuries. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo houses the Museum of Sacred Art of Suvereto. Its collection includes 15th-century wooden sculptures depicting the Angel of the Annunciation and the Virgin Mary receiving the Annunciation, created by Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Vecchietta.

The cloister of San Francesco can also be described by its architecture: it is largely intact, has a square floor plan, and features five arches on each side. The Rocca Aldobrandesca is part of the medieval castle complex and stands at its highest point on the north side. These buildings offer different points of interest—from church history and the form of a cloister to the castle complex.

The Museo Artistico della Bambola in Suvereto offers a different kind of collection, preserving more than fifty dolls. Those interested in sacred wooden sculptures will find a different subject here than the doll collection or the medieval buildings.

Events Throughout the Year

During the Medieval Evenings in July, the streets are lit by torches and candles, while performers wear historical costumes. A nighttime historical reenactment recalls the granting of the Charta Libertatis in 1201. The event combines a nighttime spectacle with a specific historical reference.

The Sagra di Suvereto takes place every year between late November and early December and has been running for more than forty years. This means there are two recurring events at different times of the year: the Medieval Evenings in July and the Sagra around the transition from November to December. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates before making your plans.

Trails Around Suvereto

Sentiero 1 runs from Suvereto via Prata and back to Suvereto. The circular route is 8.2 kilometers long, takes about two and a half hours, and is rated moderate. Sentiero 17, also known as Sentiero dei Vecchi Molini, is shorter at 3.7 kilometers and rated easy. It passes through the Valle dei Vecchi Molini and by six former water-powered mills. The two trails therefore differ in both length and difficulty. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

The Torrente Redigaffi continues to carry a moderate amount of water even in summer; freshwater fish and crayfish can be seen in it. Water levels may vary seasonally. Another option in the wider region is the Poggio Saracino route, which starts in Parco Naturale di Montioni near Montioni Nuovo. It passes visible buildings from the Napoleonic era and remains of alum mining.
