Discover Bibbona through three distinct themes: the medieval Borgo, the landscape of the Macchia della Magona and the coast of Marina di Bibbona. These highlights give you a practical basis for planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Bibbona, you can first decide whether local history, nature or the coastal landscape should shape your stay. The features of each place show how these themes differ.

The Borgo and Historic Buildings

The Borgo is a medieval town centre with narrow, stone-paved lanes and exposed-brick houses. The Pieve di Sant'Ilario was already standing in the castle quarter in 1154. Another historic landmark is the Mulino del Cardellino: the old windmill stands on a hill, operated until the beginning of the 20th century and was restored in 1967. The Forte Cavalleggeri adds the coastal defence of Marina di Bibbona to this local history. Built in 1780, the fort was part of the defences against incursions by Saracens and pirates.

The dates mark different milestones: 1154 refers to the existence of the Pieve, 1780 to the Forte Cavalleggeri and 1967 to the restoration of the windmill. Together, the buildings represent different aspects of Bibbona's history—the castle quarter, the use of windmills and the defence of the coast.

Macchia, Pine Forest and Coast

The Macchia della Magona is part of Tuscany's regional agricultural and forestry estate and covers around 1,636 hectares. It provides a habitat for wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer and foxes; migratory birds also stop there. The coast of Marina di Bibbona presents a different landscape: wide beaches with fine sand, typical tomboli covered in Mediterranean macchia and characteristic coastal dunes. The difference is clear: the Magona is defined by its area and wildlife, while sand, vegetation and dunes shape the coastal landscape.

The Pineta di Marina is part of the Riserva Naturale Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve. You can reach the pine forest via the La California exit of the SS1 Aurelia. Then follow the signs to Marina di Bibbona and Via dei Cavalleggeri Nord until you reach the area by Camping Free Beach.

Guided Tours and Local Produce

The Grotte Gialle is a destination for guided tours in Bibbona. Check the dates in advance if you would like to include a tour in your plans. This makes it easy to fit the experience into your stay without confusing it with the landscape or local features described as freely accessible.

For a taste near the Borgo, oil mills are recommended: there you can try bruschetta with locally produced extra virgin olive oil. Check with the mill in question to see whether tastings are available. Bibbona also has an outlet selling regional products from short supply chains. A tasting and a purchase are therefore two different ways to discover local produce.
