Castagneto Carducci combines a historic centre with literary history, wine and a protected wetland landscape. You can therefore choose different focuses when planning your trip: historic sites in the Borgo, a drive along Viale dei Cipressi, wildlife watching in Padule di Bolgheri, or regional cuisine and wine.

Carducci and the Historic Centre

The historic centre grew up around Castello dei Della Gherardesca, built around the year 1000. Cobblestone lanes and natural terraces characterise the town; the terraces offer views of the sea and surrounding landscape. Piazzetta della Gogna is part of this historic setting. Its name recalls the former public display of citizens in this square. Today, concerts and cultural events are held there.

The Museo Archivio Giosuè Carducci is dedicated to the poet’s literary work and his connection to the region. Exhibition panels trace important stages in his writing, which is linked to the scents, sounds and landscapes of the Maremma pisana. Carducci spent part of his childhood in Castagneto and Bolgheri. The collection includes books and magazines featuring editions of his works, photographs of people and places in his circle, and drafts of poems connected with the region. The entrance is at street level and is accessible to people with disabilities; check accessibility information before your trip.

Other cultural sites offer different perspectives: Teatro Roma was built in 1846 as a centre of local cultural life. The Museo di Arte Sacra is located in the Chiesa della Madonna Del Carmine. Chiesa di S. Lorenzo is associated with Castello dei conti Della Gherardesca. The church of Santissimo Crocifisso in the Borgo is known for a famous wooden crucifix dating from the 15th century.

Routes, Wine Country and Nature

The five-kilometre-long Viale dei Cipressi di Bolgheri is a tree-lined road. It connects the Oratorio di San Guido with the historic centre of the Borgo Bolgheri and can be driven along its entire length. Parking is available at both ends. The Strada del Vino runs along the Bolgherese, the SP16 provincial road, and leads to the municipality of Castagneto Carducci.

A different landscape is found at Padule di Bolgheri on the municipality’s northern border, between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Grosseto–Livorno railway line. Established in 1968, the wildlife refuge covers 500 hectares. Padule is a Special Protection Area and a bird sanctuary with the Natura 2000 code IT5160004; since 1977, it has also been a Ramsar wetland of international importance. In the municipal area, walkable embankments lead to observation hides, where you can watch wildlife without disturbing it.
