Collesalvetti
Accommodation in Collesalvetti
The Acquedotto Leopoldino, the Roman Mansio di Torretta Vecchia and trails to the springs give Collesalvetti a range of historical and scenic points of interest. When planning your trip, it is important to consider specific trail lengths and visitor restrictions, as well as these themes. This makes it possible to consider hiking routes and the expressly stated access restrictions at historic buildings separately.
Building history and Roman traces
The Acquedotto Leopoldino runs from Colognole in Collesalvetti to Livorno via Via delle Sorgenti. Construction began in 1793 and was completed in 1868. The route was originally designed as a walkable “aqueduct promenade.” The two dates indicate the timeframe of its construction, while the idea of a promenade describes the route’s original character.
A more recent cultural landmark is the Pinacoteca Comunale Carlo Servolini, founded in 2007. Its founding provides a much later point of reference than the municipality’s historic buildings and archaeological sites.
The Roman Mansio di Torretta Vecchia is located on the Via Aemilia Scauri. It remained in use until at least the middle of the 6th century AD and is a well-organized complex covering more than 600 square meters. Its connection to the road, long period of use and size provide specific points of reference for understanding the site as part of Collesalvetti’s archaeological history.
The Villa Medicea di Collesalvetti was acquired by Lorenzo and Giuliano de’ Medici in 1476. Today it is a private residence and cannot be visited. Its historical significance should therefore be distinguished from the possibility of visiting its interior.
Landscape and trails
The protected Sorgenti di Colognole area extends across the southwestern part of Collesalvetti’s municipal territory, just outside the village of Colognole. The place name and the protected area therefore do not refer to the same location. This distinction helps you correctly understand how the springs landscape relates to the municipal territory.
The Parco dei Monti Livornesi covers a different geographical area: it extends over 1,300 hectares in the municipalities of Livorno, Collesalvetti and Rosignano Marittimo. For orientation, the springs near Colognole and this park spanning several municipalities are two distinct scenic points of reference.
A 5.9-kilometer route along CAI trails 199, 125, 125P and 119 is indicated for walks at the springs of the Acquedotto di Colognole. A 9.2-kilometer hiking trail along CAI trails 100 and 100B leads to the Eremo della Sambuca. The walk at the springs is therefore the shorter of the two options with stated distances. The Eremo is a protected national monument; its interior cannot be visited.
Collesalvetti offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. The two hiking trails mentioned have specific lengths and trail numbers; the other activities add to the range of options but are not tied to these routes.
