Coast, dunes and cycle path

The coast at Marina di Bibbona has wide beaches with fine sand. Dunes and coastal strips of Mediterranean maquis are also characteristic of this stretch of coast. The beaches are suitable for swimming and water sports. This means you can enjoy the beach and water activities alongside a landscape shaped by dunes and maquis.

A five-kilometre cycle path runs through the pine forest of Marina di Bibbona, connecting the beach area with Cecina Mare. It provides a clearly defined, five-kilometre cycling route between these two areas. If you’d like to combine time by the sea with a ride through a pine forest, this is an alternative to the trails in the Macchia della Magona.

Forests and trails

Around Bolgheri Station, the Macchia della Magona comprises Mediterranean maquis as well as deciduous and pine forests. There are 16 trails totalling 50 kilometres for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. These figures describe a network of multiple trails and three named activities; by contrast, the cycle path through the pine forest is a single, five-kilometre connection to the beach area and Cecina Mare.

Named hiking routes also feature among the options. The coastal branch of the Cammino Francigena Mare connects with Bolgheri Station and reaches the sea at Marina di Bibbona and Cecina. Nearby, the route intersects not only with the Via Francigena but also with the Vie Etrusche Volterra–Piombino and Volterra–Fiesole. Another trail, the Cammino Dalla Via Francigena alla Costa degli Etruschi, has its endpoints at the Certaldo and Bolgheri or Cecina FS railway stations. Check the current trail conditions for this route before setting out.

Bolgheri: cypress avenue and local delicacies

Nearby, in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, is the five-kilometre Viale dei Cipressi, lined with cypress trees. The road connects the Oratorio di San Guido with the historic centre of Bolgheri. The Oratorio is a hexagonal temple commissioned by the Della Gherardesca family. Together, the avenue and the Oratorio offer two specific points of interest for a visit: a named road connection and a building with a distinctive geometric shape.

The Tra Castagneto Carducci e Bolgheri cycle route leads to the Viale dei Cipressi and into the historic centre of Bolgheri. In Bolgheri, the route also offers the opportunity to sample typical local products from the regional cuisine. Bolgheri is also associated with well-known wines such as Bolgheri DOC, Ornellaia and Masseto. This lets you consider a cycling route to the destinations mentioned alongside a culinary focus in Bolgheri.

When looking for hotels in Bolgheri Station, you can first decide whether the coast, trails or a visit to Bolgheri will shape your stay.
