Capraia Island: Volcanic Landscape, Nature and History
Accommodation in Capraia Island
Capraia Island combines a distinctive volcanic landscape with wetlands, Mediterranean maquis and traces of earlier land use. The island offers several different highlights to help you plan your trip: nature watching, geological formations and historic trails. Isola di Capraia is the only volcanic island in the Tuscan Archipelago and has been part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park since 1996.
Volcanic Landscapes and Nature at the Stagnone
The island is predominantly mountainous. On the west coast, the slopes drop very steeply, while they are gentler in the east. At 445 metres, Monte Castello is Capraia’s highest peak. The contrast between the steep west coast and the gentler eastern slopes gives the landscape its varied forms; Monte Castello provides a clear point of reference for elevation.
The Stagnone is the only lake in the Tuscan Archipelago. It formed in a natural depression and is fed by rainwater and groundwater. It is also an important wetland and a popular place to observe migratory birds, especially in spring. Those interested in the island’s nature will find both a distinctive inland body of water and a seasonal birdwatching spot here.
More than 650 plant species have been recorded on Capraia, a significant proportion of which are endemic. The waters around the island offer their own natural attractions, including Posidonia seagrass meadows and submerged rock walls that draw snorkellers and divers. The natural features described here therefore range from plants and wetlands to underwater habitats.
Trails, Geology and Island History
The Sentiero del Reganico passes through habitats where you can discover Capraia’s natural diversity. Visitors can also spot plant species they have noticed before. Cala dello Zurletto offers a different perspective on the island: here, you can observe characteristic folds, intrusions and forms of marine erosion. The trail highlights habitats and plants, while the cove focuses on geological formations.
A hiking trail leads from the Stagnone over Monte Le Penne to the harbour, crossing the grounds of the former agricultural penal colony. Along the way, you can see ruins and the former buildings known as Caseificio, Stalle and Lavanderia. The route links the natural landscape with historic traces of the site’s former use; the buildings are described here only as they have been recorded.
A short walk along the old mule track takes you to the town’s characteristic fortified houses. Their very thick walls and former use explain a specific feature of their design: to protect against attacks, the houses were once inhabited only on the upper floors. The Strada di San Leonardo, which dates back to Roman times, is another walking option between the harbour and the town, passing through Mediterranean maquis.
The buildings also offer a glimpse into different periods. Forte San Giorgio and Torretta del Bagno are fortifications dating from the period of Genoese rule. The Chiesa di San Nicola houses a wooden statue dedicated to the saint, which was recovered from the sea.
Seasonal Experiences and Getting There
The time of year can also guide your plans: the Stagnone is especially interesting for observing migratory birds in spring; the Walking Festival includes guided hikes and walking excursions on Capraia in spring and autumn. At the long-running Palio marinaro dell’Arcipelago Toscano, in which Capraia takes part, crews from the Tuscan islands compete in rowing boats in August and September. The Sagra del Totano takes place every year in November and combines a squid-fishing competition with a Sagra and food and wine stalls. If you are planning your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.
