Hiking trails, coastal scenery, and traditional architectural styles offer different perspectives on Zanca. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the routes described by their course and destination: some lead to La Zanca or start there, while others explore stretches of coastline or a woodland area.

Hiking around La Zanca

Sentiero n. 113 connects La Zanca with the junction for Sentiero n. 103 near Marciana. It can also be used to access two circular walks. Check the current condition of the paths before setting out if you include these routes in your plans.

The two named walks can also be distinguished by their routes. “Quattro passi tra mari e monti” – Itinerario n. 1 leads from Capo Sant’Andrea up to La Zanca via an old mule track. The “Archeo Trek” – Itinerario n. 3 reaches the provincial road near La Zanca via Sentiero n. 13, then follows an old mule track back to Capo Sant’Andrea. The first route focuses on the climb to La Zanca; the Archeo Trek includes the section along Sentiero n. 13 and the return to Capo Sant’Andrea in its described route.

From the hamlet of La Zanca, Sentiero n. 13 leads in about 30 minutes to a woodland with centuries-old chestnut trees and other tall trees. This route therefore focuses on a woodland destination, while the other two descriptions name Capo Sant’Andrea as a starting point or return destination. The time given is approximate.

Coastal paths and nearby destinations

Sentiero n. 150 runs along the entire coast to Marciana Marina and connects the nearby beaches. Access to individual beaches may vary by season. Bear these changing conditions in mind when planning a walk along the coastal path or a beach visit.

Nearby, the granite cliff “le Cote Piane” can be reached via a granite promenade built from the beach. Another footpath leads to the small beach of Cotoncello. The paths and coastal destinations offer different points of reference for your plans; conditions on the promenade and at the access points may change.

Experienced divers may be interested in dives near the rocks “Formiche della Zanca,” which rise halfway out of the water. The rocks lie west of Sant’Andrea. If diving is one of your travel interests, find out about local rules and diving conditions in advance.

Traditional architecture in Zanca

In the western part of Zanca, many buildings have retained their original structure and traditional use. Traditional architectural and landscape features include an old chapel. There are also walls along the roadside and small stables that still stand flush with the road.

These features give the western part a distinctive built character: in addition to buildings, the chapel, walls, and stables are part of the area’s traditional appearance. If you are interested in architecture and landscape, you can take these details into account when choosing a destination, alongside the hiking and coastal routes. They complement the route descriptions with a glimpse of the area’s traditional use and design.

Seasonal service within the municipality

Within the municipality, the seasonal Marebus service runs from June to the end of August between Sant’Andrea, La Zanca, Patresi, and Colle d’Orano; it is coordinated with the regular bus services. If you want to include this connection in your travel plans, check the current timetable before setting out. This way, you can account for the seasonal operating period without assuming fixed departure times.
