Discover Rosignano Marittimo
Accommodation in Rosignano Marittimo
Rosignano Marittimo brings together traces of local history, archaeological and natural history collections, and a municipal park area. During your stay, you can focus on historic buildings and water culture, museums, or trails in Parco dei Poggetti. The town’s history can be seen in small sites as well as in collections with a regional perspective.
Historic Sites and Water Culture
The historic washhouses of Rosignano Marittimo were built shortly after the mid-19th century and remained in use until the 1960s. You can reach the washhouse area via a short, rustic staircase from the roundabout below the town. Take the stairs into account when planning your visit. On Via della Fonte, near Botro dei Goracci, a complex of springs includes public washhouses. Mulino dei Goracci can be reached by a staircase leading to Fonte dei Goracci.
The townscape also offers other historical points of interest: the Borgo features impressive, well-preserved towers. The Castello includes palaces that once belonged to the area’s most important landowners. The parish church houses a remarkable 15th-century painting dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie. The windmill is considered the oldest mill in the area. Fonte del Latte is associated with a local legend: according to the story, its waters can restore the milk of a mother who has lost it. This tale is part of local tradition.
Archaeology and Natural History
The Museo Civico Archeologico in Palazzo Bombardieri explores the history of settlements and resource use along the coast between Castiglioncello and the River Cecina, as well as in the hinterland. Its time span ranges from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Guided tours and educational activities for schools, families and groups are available by prior reservation.
The Museo di Storia Naturale – MuSNa offers a natural history perspective. Its permanent exhibition is spread across ten themed rooms and includes collections in mineralogy, botany and zoology. The marine room presents the Pelagos Sanctuary, a permanent project of the Tuscany Region to study and protect whales, dolphins and sea turtles. The museum’s subject matter thus ranges from natural history collections to the protection of marine species.
Parco dei Poggetti and Events
The Parco dei Poggetti area lies entirely within the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo. It stretches from the eastern slope of the hill on which the town is situated to the SS 206. Sentiero 00 and the Ippovia del Mediterraneo cross the park in its entirety. If you are interested in visiting the park while planning your trip, the names of these two routes provide a specific reference to the trails that run through it.
Events also offer a variety of highlights. As part of Settembre Rosignanese, a Renaissance historical pageant is held in honor of the patron saint, San Nicola: a procession of lords, ladies, knights and commoners features faithful reproductions of historical costumes. The Festa del Vino offers tastings of local wines, an exhibition of old items from rural life, artisan markets and dance evenings. If you would like to include one of these festivals in your trip, check the dates for your stay in advance.
