Gabbro brings together historical themes, a distinctive landscape and specific details about a hiking route. When planning your trip, you can focus on different topics: art history, the town’s origins, villas and mill ruins sit alongside geology, fossils and outdoor activities. Each topic offers its own way to explore Gabbro and its surroundings.

Art History and Local History

Gabbro has medieval origins. The town is associated with Silvestro Lega and what is known as the “Gabbro period”: during this phase, the artist often stayed at the villa of the Bandini family, his friends, in Poggio Piano. This is separate from Villa Mirabella, also called “Il Palazzo,” which stands on a hill southeast of Gabbro. It was probably built in the 1740s as a summer residence for the Finocchietti family.

These offer several historical points of interest: the town’s medieval origins, Lega’s stays with the Bandini family, and the presumed date of construction of Villa Mirabella. “Il Palazzo” is another name for this villa. If you are interested in art and architectural history, it helps to treat Lega’s stays and the history of the villa as separate topics.

Numerous watermills once stood along the upper valley of the Botro Sanguigna, and their remains have survived. The mills are part of the history of this valley; Villa Mirabella, in turn, is located by its position on a hill southeast of Gabbro and by its name. These different traces of past use and architectural history sit alongside one another without forming a single sightseeing stop.

Geology and Fossils

Serpentinite is widely exposed around Gabbro and forms the entire distinctive ridge of Monte Carvoli. Here, the geological theme is linked to a specific landscape feature. Fossils found near Gabbro include fish, leaves, seeds from various plants, insects, insect larvae and bird feathers. The finds therefore range from plant remains to animals. Together, serpentinite and fossils offer two different perspectives on nature: the rock and the ridge on the one hand, and the diversity of fossils on the other.

Strada del Mille Route Details

The Strada del Mille is described with several specific route details to help you plan your hike. The section from Gabbro to Laghetto delle Serre is 7 kilometres long, with 375 metres of ascent and 215 metres of descent. These figures apply to this section and give the distance and elevation change, not the walking time.

Access to the Strada del Mille is described separately: from the public car park on Via delle Capanne in Gabbro, reach the trail via the southeast side exit and a footpath of just under 1 kilometre along Via Miramare. The distance of just under 1 kilometre therefore applies to the walk from the car park; the 7 kilometres refer to the section to Laghetto delle Serre. These figures have different reference points and should not be read as a single total distance without checking. Check the local signposting before setting off.

The trail known as the “Strada del Mille,” Sentiero 199, leads to Gabbro, near Villa Mirabella. In addition to the distance and elevation figures, the route description therefore includes a named destination and the villa’s location. The villa’s proximity is given as a landmark; when planning your own trip, it is helpful to distinguish this from the figures for the route section and access walk.

A Local Tradition

The “Solenne Benedizione degli Animali” is described as a traditional ceremony held in the church square. A description from 2018 says that it takes place every year on the Sunday closest to the feast of Sant’Antonio Abate. Check the dates locally for your travel year before including the ceremony in your plans.
