Nibbiaia originated in the second half of the 18th century as a rural settlement along the ancient Vajolo ridge road. It led from Castelnuovo toward the sea near Quercianella. From Nibbiaia, views extend across the Tuscan Archipelago. The settlement’s history and its expansive landscape views are two distinct aspects of the place.

Settlement History and Historic Trails

The Vajolo is part of the historic context in which the settlement originated. Another connection to the area’s trails is the Chiesa di San Giuseppe: it lies on the historic trail from Nibbiaia to Monte Nero, now called Via Saffi. The church was dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel and Saint Joseph on November 20, 1864. This distinguishes two connections: the Vajolo runs from Castelnuovo toward the sea near Quercianella, while the trail by the church connects Nibbiaia with Monte Nero.

Hills, Park, and Trails

The nearby Parco dei Poggetti extends from the eastern slope of the hill where Nibbiaia is located to the S.S. 206. Its extent provides a specific point of reference for the area around the village: the park covers the slope and reaches the road. The Sentiero 00 and the Ippovia del Mediterraneo cross the entire park.

The Sentiero 00 is also described by its varied trail features. On the way to Montenero, it climbs toward Nibbiaia through wooded and agricultural areas. It also follows a paved section of an old road and leads to the hilltop fortress of Monte Carvoli. A bridleway begins in Nibbiaia and runs through the entire municipal area. The route descriptions therefore differ: the bridleway is described in terms of its starting point and extent within the municipal area, while the Sentiero 00 is described in terms of its terrain, old road surface, and fortress.

Mural and Festival

The Wonderwall project created the mural “La Strada” by Oblo Creature in Nibbiaia. Alongside historic trails and the church, a mural with a specific name is among the village’s cultural features. The 2026 edition of Nibbiaia in festa took place from July 24 to 26 and included live performances and concerts every evening. These dates refer to the 2026 edition.

The Cycling Tour Route

A cycling tour reaches Nibbiaia at kilometer 46.8. From there, it goes via Aia della Vecchia to Chioma and continues toward Castiglioncello along the coast. The route can therefore be understood as a sequence of named places and coastal stretches. This sets the tour apart from the trail descriptions around the village: the Sentiero 00 features woodland, agricultural areas, an old road, and the hilltop fortress; the bridleway is characterized by its starting point in Nibbiaia and its route through the municipal area. These different details can help you tailor your focus on Nibbiaia’s landscape and trails to your travel interests.
