Scarperia: Palazzo, Knife-Making and History
Accommodation in Scarperia
Discover Scarperia through its knife-making tradition, architectural history and recurring events. A good starting point is Palazzo dei Vicari: it was built around the middle of the 14th century on the west side of today's Piazza dei Vicari. The Museo dei Ferri Taglienti is dedicated to Scarperia's centuries-old knife-making trade. This lets you explore the town's craft traditions alongside its architectural history.
Palazzo dei Vicari and Knife-Making
Part of the museum tour leads to the Antica Bottega del Coltellinaio outside the Palazzo. It can be visited with a guide and by prior arrangement. A demonstration of knife-making shows several stages of the process: the blade and spring are forged, the handle is shaped from cow horn, and assembly, sharpening and polishing follow. This sequence shows how many individual steps go into making a knife.
Another historical feature to see is the castle's bell tower: on a guided tour, you can climb it and see the clock's original location. Guided tours in Scarperia are available by prior arrangement only. As arrangements for visits and demonstrations may change, confirm your plans before visiting.
Events Throughout the Year
Aperitivi sui Merli is held every year from June to September on the battlements of the Palazzo dei Vicari façade. Dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for the relevant edition in advance.
The Palio del Diotto is held every year in Scarperia's main square. The Giornate Rinascimentali also return annually, bringing Scarperia's past to life. The events offer different points of interest: for Aperitivi, both a seasonal period and the Palazzo as the venue are specified; for the Palio, the main square; and for the Giornate, the revival of the past.
Sacred Art and Local History
Scarperia's Propositura was founded in 1326. The Oratorio della Madonna di Piazza dates to 1320; the formal inauguration of the vicars took place there. The Oratorio also houses the Madonna di Piazza by Jacopo del Casentino. The site is therefore associated both with a historical ceremony and with a named work of art. The two dates refer to different events: 1320 to the Oratorio and 1326 to the founding of the Propositura.
Routes Through and From Scarperia
The “Pedalare fra natura e storia nel Mugello” cycling route passes through Scarperia. Another route, “Tra curve e tornanti del Passo del Giogo,” runs from San Piero a Sieve via Scarperia and Passo del Giogo to Rifredo and Firenzuola. This distinguishes a cycling route that passes through the town from a route with an explicitly named sequence of places.
From Scarperia, the route climbs 10 km to Passo del Giogo, at an altitude of 882 m. The two figures refer to different measurements: 10 km is the length of the climb, and 882 m is the pass's elevation. Road conditions and navigation details may change; check them before your trip.
