MuGot and historical context

MuGot – Museo Gotica Toscana is located in the hamlet of Ponzalla and consists of four large halls. It was founded in 2011 to preserve the memory of the fighting in September 1944 between German troops and the Allies in the Apennines north of Florence. This defines the historical focus precisely: MuGot centers on the fighting in the Apennines north of Florence and the memory of those events.

MuGot offers visitors, researchers and school groups a range of battlefield installations, as well as numerous museum objects from the Second World War. The formats have different focuses: the installations are located on the battlefield, while the objects are part of the museum collection. When planning your visit, you can therefore decide whether you would prefer to focus on the outdoor installations or the museum objects.

Visits and hiking trails

Booking through MuGot is required for battlefield visits and Battlefield tours in a nine-seat van. Bunkers and installations along a ridge at least five kilometres long around Passo del Giogo can be visited by prior appointment. These requirements apply to different types of visit. Plan your booking or appointment to suit your plans, and confirm the relevant arrangements before you travel.

The Gothic Line installations are also part of several themed hiking trails that can be combined with a visit to MuGot. This allows you to combine a museum visit with a hike relating to the Gothic Line. One hiking route along the line starts at Passo del Giogo and initially follows the signposted forest track on trails 00 and SO.F.T. After about 400 metres, it branches off through a forest towards Monte Altuzzo. The approximate distance marks the turnoff; the direction towards Monte Altuzzo indicates the route from there.

Route and remembrance

Another route description is called “Tra curve e tornanti del Passo del Giogo” (“Through the curves and hairpin bends of Passo del Giogo”). After leaving Scarperia, the route passes through Ponzalla and climbs for ten kilometres to Passo del Giogo. The two descriptions have different focuses: this route specifies the section through Ponzalla and the length of the climb, while the hiking route describes the trail markings, turnoff and direction towards Monte Altuzzo.

The fighting is also commemorated at a specific monument. The Monumento ai Caduti del 363° Reggimento Fanteria US bears the names of 436 soldiers of the 363rd US Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, who were killed in action in this area. The monument adds a named place of remembrance to the museum and hiking experience.

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Ponzalla, deciding what you want to focus on will help you plan. A visit to MuGot, a booked battlefield visit and a hike relating to the Gothic Line all involve different plans for the day. Before travelling, take into account the applicable booking or appointment requirements for battlefield visits, Battlefield tours, and visits to the bunkers and installations.
