San Piero a Sieve offers several highlights for a stay in the Mugello: sacred art, Medici architectural history, trails through the rural surroundings, and local events. If you are looking for a hotel, it is best to first decide which of these themes will shape your trip. A visit by appointment requires different planning from a day on signposted trails or a visit timed around the market and autumn festival. Include scheduled visits and specific event dates in your plans.

Parish Church, Oratory and Fortress

The Pieve di San Pietro is one of the oldest parish churches in the Mugello; it may be the oldest. The current building dates from the mid-12th century and was probably built over an earlier structure. The Pieve is already mentioned in a document from 1018. Inside is a glazed terracotta baptismal font attributed to Giovanni della Robbia. Here, a long architectural history and a specific work of art come together in one place.

The Oratorio della Compagnia also has a long history in the area: the old hospital was located there from 1275. Today, the oratory is managed by Pro Loco San Piero a Sieve APS and is suitable for art exhibitions, photography exhibitions, and social and cultural conferences. If you plan to attend an exhibition or conference, check the current program.

The Fortezza S. Martino offers insight into another chapter of Medici architectural history. Construction began at the Medici’s behest on June 30, 1569. Bernardo Buontalenti probably completed the final design in the last decade of the 16th century. The irregular defensive perimeter, with seven bastions, extends for about a mile. A public tour of the fortress led by its owners is scheduled annually; confirm the details before your visit.

The Villa Medicea del Trebbio is located in San Piero a Sieve and is a Medici residence recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It was built for Cosimo de’ Medici by Michelozzo on the remains of a feudal tower. The villa is privately owned; visits are possible by appointment. If it is a highlight of your cultural itinerary, arrange your visit before you arrive.
