Explore Rovereto from different perspectives: art and contemporary history sit alongside nature topics and outdoor trails. If you’re looking for a hotel in Rovereto, these highlights can help guide your trip planning. Choose the topics that interest you most during your stay.

Museums, art and history

The Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra (MITAG) is housed in Castello di Rovereto. Its permanent exhibition displays artefacts and historical finds from the First World War; the museum is one of Italy’s most important museums dedicated to this war. The Torrione Marino in the castle also houses a collection of modern-era weapons from the 16th to the 18th century. The Campana dei Caduti offers another connection to the history of the First World War: it was cast from bronze taken from cannons belonging to the nations involved in the war. As the world’s largest bell that rings with a full peal, it tolls one hundred times every evening at sunset. The exact time may vary depending on the season.

Major exhibitions change at Mart in Rovereto; its collection comprises around 20,000 works spanning more than 150 years of art history. It includes Futurism, Novecento, Metaphysical art, abstraction, Arte Povera and conceptual art, among other movements. Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero is devoted to the work of Fortunato Depero: visitors can see paintings, tapestries, mosaics, drawings, design objects, collages, posters, event posters and furniture. It is Italy’s only Futurist museum.

Those interested in the city’s development can explore Rovereto’s history from different perspectives at the Museo della Città. Artworks from the city, archaeological finds, photographs, archival documents and multimedia materials tell the story from prehistoric origins through the medieval community to the modern city. The Museo di Scienze e Archeologia, in turn, brings together archaeology, zoology, botany, astronomy, geosciences and robotics in permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. Its botanical exhibition presents the flora of Trentino, as well as the history and botanical richness of Monte Baldo.

The CoBo Museum at the Torrefazione Bontadi coffee house also has a distinctive focus: its collection includes more than 300 tools for coffee production and processing, including some original pieces dating back to 1790. This adds a look at the history of coffee to the range of art and history topics.

Nature trails and outdoor activities

At Bosco della Città, the Percorso Natura shares information about the area’s flora, fauna and geology through information panels. The Percorso Ciclopedonale there is mostly flat and offers panoramic views over Vallagarina and the Monti Lessini. The two trails have different focuses: one makes nature topics accessible along the way, while the other combines exercise with views of the surrounding landscape.

Rovereto also offers several named routes for cycling. The network comprises four main routes: pista Longa, pista del Leno, pista della Roggia and pista del Lavoro. There are also other routes within the city’s neighbourhoods. Dedicated signposting and maps along the routes help with navigation; for your specific plans, it is a good idea to check the latest maps.

Another outing takes you to the Orme dei dinosauri. From the car park at Baita degli Alpini, it takes about 30 minutes on foot along an unpaved road to reach them, ending at a viewing bridge. The walking time is approximate; local conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check them before your visit.

Cityscape and trip planning

Rovereto’s past is reflected in more than its collections. Traces of the silk industry are still visible in the cityscape. These include buildings up to seven storeys tall in areas where buildings are usually no more than three storeys tall. This contrast adds a perspective on the city’s architectural history to a museum visit.

The range of topics gives your trip a clear focus without requiring you to fit everything into one stay. For visits tied to a schedule, such as the fulldome projections at the Planetario del Museo, check the current programme: they are offered on Saturday afternoons in the immersive dome cinema, but dates may change.
