In Tiarno di Sopra, hiking and cycling routes meet the natural setting of Lago d’Ampola and historic buildings. The routes differ in their paths and destinations; the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo and Casa Oliari are also worth exploring.

Nature at Lago d’Ampola

Lago d’Ampola is a natural habitat for frogs, tadpoles, reeds and water lilies. From Tiarno di Sopra, you can reach it via a short walk through the woods or a cycling path. The Sentiero del Troc - Lago d’Ampola follows a forest track and a cycling path to the lake’s visitor centre. This lets you include the lake in your plans on foot or by bike, without treating the two connections as one and the same.

Lago d’Ampola is also a nature reserve, a Zona Speciale di Conservazione and part of the Rete di Riserve Alpi Ledrensi protected area network. Its natural setting and protected habitats give the lake a distinct focus alongside the routes through the town. If you are interested in the landscape and its wildlife and plant life, frogs, tadpoles, reeds and water lilies are among the specific features of this destination.

Hiking trails and route descriptions

The Stigolo hike starts in Tiarno di Sopra and follows SAT trail 458 through the Valle Sacche to Monte Rango. The route then descends to Malga Stigolo. The landscape is described as offering views from the Valle del Chiese to the peaks of the Adamello range, whose granite walls and glaciers shape the panorama.

For the return journey, the route follows a wooded mule track into the area of the Lago d’Ampola nature reserve. The rest of the way back to Tiarno di Sopra includes trail 458, a gravel road followed by a paved road, and a cycling and pedestrian path. These details give you an indication of the route; they do not specify a walking time or difficulty level. Trail and mountain conditions may vary. Check current conditions before setting out.

Another hiking route, Santi Pietro e Paolo, takes its name from the annual march held in June in honour of Saints Peter and Paul, the patron saints of Tiarno di Sopra. This brings a local tradition into focus alongside the nature trails. The Sentiero del Troc - Lago d’Ampola, in turn, connects the forest track and cycling path with the visitor centre by the lake. The routes therefore offer different destinations: one takes in a recurring religious occasion, while another connects to the natural setting.

Cycling through the town and valley

Several route descriptions pass through Tiarno di Sopra, each with a specific route. La Boemia in Valle di Ledro follows the cycling path into town, reaching Piazza MilĂn. The Ciclabile della Valle di Ledro runs through the valley and, among other places, through Pieve, Bezzecca, Tiarno di Sotto and Tiarno di Sopra. The Tour della Valle di Ledro enters the town and crosses it via Via Guglielmo Marconi.

The Ledro Gravel Tour follows Via di Brì to Tiarno di Sopra and then continues along Via Marconi beside the river. For mountain bikers, the Caset Pubregn - Trail variant is a separate route option: its paved climb is concentrated on the section between Tiarno di Sopra and Tremalzo. This makes it possible to distinguish the named routes through the town from the described climbing section. Route conditions may change seasonally; plan your ride according to current conditions.

Church and historic architecture

After extensive expansion work, the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo was reconsecrated on 2 February 1652 and dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul. Seven altars and precious sacred furnishings are documented for 1671. The two dates offer a glimpse into the church’s history: the documented furnishings followed the expansion and reconsecration.

Casa Oliari in Tiarno di Sopra is an elegant residence belonging to a Venetian merchant family. A family coat of arms, installed towards the end of the 16th century, is visible on the exterior façade. If you specifically want to see this detail, check whether it is visible when you visit. The church and residence offer different historical points of interest, without implying anything about access to the buildings.
