Gereut’s cultural profile brings together the Mòcheno language, sacred art and local traditions. In Frassilongo/Garait and its hamlets, these themes can be seen in place names, churches, an inscription and the old De Mil mill. If you want to plan your trip around cultural interests, you’ll find different kinds of heritage here: language and landscape names as well as architectural history and water power.

Language and names

Some families in Frassilongo speak Mòcheno. The language’s influence is also reflected in names: in Frassilongo/Garait, names for inhabited places, summer pastures, forests and mountain areas are predominantly Mòcheno. The subject therefore extends beyond individual buildings to include the naming of different settlement and landscape areas. Spoken language and place names offer you a tangible way to engage with the local culture.

Churches, fresco and inscription

On the facade of Frassilongo’s old church is a fresco of Saint Christopher dating from 1521, attributed to Nicolò Paracchia. In Roveda stands the Church of San Romedio, dedicated to Saint Romedius and built around 1797.

An inscription in Mòcheno on the portal of San Romedio commemorates Roveda’s itinerant traders. The inscription is an integral part of the building and records a specific aspect of local history: trade on the move. The church and portal thus bring together a religious dedication and a linguistic tribute to the traders.

Hamlets, chapel and mill

The higher-lying hamlet of Kamaovrunt is picturesque for its architecture and setting. The Chapel of Madonna della Pace is located there and was blessed on 15 July 1984. Don Guido Avi designed the chapel. Different dates can therefore be compared: the 1521 fresco, the approximate construction date of San Romedio around 1797, and the chapel’s blessing in 1984. Each refers respectively to a work of art, a construction or a blessing.

The old De Mil mill in Roveda/Oachlait, a hamlet of Frassilongo, reveals another side of the cultural heritage. It is powered by the waters of the Rio Rigolor and is temporarily closed. Unlike the churches, the focus here is on the use of water power to run a mill. In this way, milling technology and water power complement the sacred heritage with a view of the area shaped by craftsmanship.

Route and time-specific event

The Bernstol Way is a route for hiking on foot and with snowshoes in the cadastral area of Frassilongo. A municipal notice dated 30 July 2026 describes a route that runs partly through the municipality of Frassilongo and partly through the neighboring municipality of Fierozzo. The route therefore covers two municipal areas.

The Bersntol Ring 2025 is another reference tied to a specific edition. For that edition, the start and finish were beside the chapel in Kamaovrunt (Kamauz), a hamlet in the municipality of Frassilongo. Eight food and drink stops serving traditional Mòcheno and Trentino dishes were planned along the route. The Bernstol Way focuses on the walking options mentioned and its route, while the Bersntol Ring concerns the start, finish and planned culinary offering for the 2025 edition.
