Stelvio lies in the heart of Stelvio National Park. The characteristic Romanesque clustered village of the upper Vinschgau is laid out in terraces. In the 15th century, miners established the settlement while extracting iron ore on the Ortler. Its location in the national park, Romanesque settlement form and mining history each highlight a different aspect: the natural landscape, the village layout and the origins of the settlement. The park setting describes the landscape; the clustered-village layout and ore mining, by contrast, explain the village’s distinctive character. For a trip combining an interest in culture and alpine scenery, these features provide a concrete framework before you choose among Stelvio’s different destinations.

Archaikweg: Historical Traces and Views

The Archaikweg follows sections of a historic Alpine crossing route, passes the prehistoric settlement of “Gaschlin” and reaches the mountain village of Stelvio. Points of historical interest along the trail are marked with information panels; the trail also offers views of the Ortler Group. Two periods of history meet here: a historic Alpine crossing route and the prehistoric settlement of Gaschlin. The views complement these cultural traces with a landscape perspective. Those particularly interested in early settlement and the history of routes will find several specific points of interest along the Archaikweg, rather than a single viewpoint.

Obere Stilfser Alm and Hiking Trails

Obere Stilfser Alm lies at an altitude of 2,077 metres above the mountain village of Stelvio and is the starting point for numerous hikes. The trail to Piz Chavalatsch is considered a particularly popular route. There are two described routes to the alpine pasture, both taking two hours: trail no. 2 starts at the Fragges wildlife park, while trail no. 4 starts at the Trafoi chairlift. The matching time estimates make it easy to compare them; the routes differ in trail number and starting point. Trail and lift conditions can vary by season, so check them before setting out. This helps distinguish the approach to the alpine pasture from other hiking destinations: the two-hour estimates apply to the trails leading to the pasture; the route to Piz Chavalatsch is one of the hikes for which the pasture serves as a starting point.

Stelvio Gold Lakes

The Stelvio Gold Lakes are in the alpine pasture area above the village of Stelvio. They form a network of small streams and lakes; a circular trail near Obere Stilfser Alm leads to the lakes. The small alpine waters are bordered by striking clumps of cotton grass and offer open views of the Ortler region. If you are interested in alpine waters and expansive mountain views, this is a different focus from the alpine pasture as a starting point for numerous hikes: at the Gold Lakes, the circular trail and the landscape of streams, lakes and cotton grass take centre stage.

Traditions in Stelvio

Local customs are also part of what Stelvio has to offer. During Klosn, young men portray the Schellern, donkeys and Tuifeln, wearing frightening masks and colourful costumes and ringing heavy bells. Pfluagziachn is an ancient carnival custom that takes place every two years on the Saturday after Unsinniger Donnerstag. The two customs have different emphases: Klosn centres on the characters, their costumes and the ringing of bells; Pfluagziachn also follows a set biennial schedule. If you are planning a trip around this custom, the schedule and date are important.
