Terres: Churches, Frescoes and Trails
Accommodation in Terres
Terres lies between orchards and forests. Churches and frescoes offer insights into the area’s history; trails run along an old irrigation canal and lead to the Glare. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these different themes: the churches tell different parts of the story, while the routes each have their own connections to the landscape and water.
Churches and Frescoes in Terres
The Chiesa di San Giorgio is the oldest church in Terres. Its original structure dates to after 1150. Fragmentary battle scenes from the late 13th or early 14th century survive inside the church and are attributed to the so-called Maestro di Ceniga. A fresco depicting Saint George and the princess was removed in 1926 and is kept at Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento. This distinguishes two different references to the frescoes: the battle scenes are inside San Giorgio, while the image of Saint George is kept in Trento.
The Chiesa dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo also has a long history: it has been documented since 1537 and probably dates from the 13th or 14th century. After the fire of August 16, 1802, the present-day church was built next to the older San Giorgio chapel. Construction began in 1828 and ended in 1830. The earlier dating and the later rebuilding thus describe different stages in the church’s history.
Trails to the Glare and Lago di Tovel
The “Da Flavon-Terres al Lago – Val di Tovel” route starts in Flavon or Terres and leads to Lago di Tovel. It connects with Val di Tovel via a safe, convenient and fast cycling and pedestrian tunnel. The temperature inside the Terres tunnel remains constant at 10 °C, so bring suitable clothing. As operational access may change, check the route’s current accessibility before setting out.
A route through the Terres tunnel leads to the Glare. The scree slope has a lunar appearance; it was formed by an old landslide that came down from Monte Corno several centuries ago. The Glare thus combines a striking landscape with its geological history.
The Sentiero Margherita, also known as “Il Lez,” offers a different focus. The trail is flat and follows the more than 160-year-old Lez irrigation canal. The canal irrigated the fields of Terres, Flavon and Cunevo and drew water from the Tresenica stream in Val di Tovel. Unlike the tunnel route, this trail is defined by its flat course and the canal’s former purpose.
Forest Playground and Trip Planning
Parco giochi Terres is a forest playground with wooden houses in the trees, slides and swings. If the play facilities are important to your plans, check what is currently available before your visit, as individual facilities may change.
When looking for a hotel in Terres, consider the focus of your planned trip: church history and frescoes offer a different emphasis from trails and landscape.
