Piazzola: Hiking Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Piazzola
Piazzola is the highest-elevation hamlet in the municipality of Rabbi, at 1,314 metres above sea level. This elevation is a notable landmark for planning your trip: the SI C03 route of the Sentiero Italia CAI passes through the hamlet, and trails from Piazzola lead to high-altitude mountain huts. Hiking is just one of the possible outings, however. Historic buildings, a sound park, lakes and thermal waters each offer a different focus. When planning your stay, you can organise the various destinations around whether you want to focus on trails, nature or culture.
Hiking Trails and High-Altitude Destinations
The Via delle Malghe is a 100-kilometre network of hiking trails and forest roads in Val di Sole. Most of the network lies within Stelvio National Park; one section is marked at Cavallar (Piazzola). Val di Rabbi is also protected by Stelvio National Park. The “Percorso del Latte e dei Masi” themed trail starts at the Rabbi Fonti visitor centre and follows the old mule track to Piazzola. The starting point is therefore the visitor centre; the trail follows the mule track and ends in the hamlet.
The “Le malghe di Rabbi” route has clearly specified difficulty, length and duration: it is considered moderately difficult, is 8.8 kilometres long and takes six hours. It starts at Cavallar, which is accessible from Piazzola. These details make it possible to set aside a longer block of time for the hike; snow and access conditions vary by season. Trails from Piazzola also lead to the Rifugio Stella Alpina al Lago Corvo mountain hut at 2,425 metres above sea level and the Rifugio S. Dorigoni mountain hut at 2,437 metres. Conditions on trails to high-altitude destinations can change with the season, and hut operations may also vary. Check both before setting out.
Sound Park, Lakes and Nature
“Fruscìo” is a sound park in the forest at Pozzatine in Val di Rabbi. It lies at an altitude of 1,650 metres and features seven sound and sensory stations. It can be reached on foot from Piazzola. Visibility may vary in winter; take this seasonal limitation into account when planning a visit to the park.
The lakes also offer a connection with nature: the Laghi Corvo lakes are of glacial origin. The Lago Corvo is home to a population of Arctic char, a fish species typical of high-altitude lakes. The lakes’ formation and the fish life of the individual Lago Corvo therefore offer two distinct natural themes.
Church, Museum and Thermal Waters
The Church of Madonna di Loreto was built in the second half of the 18th century as an extension of an original place of worship. That building had been constructed in 1748 and was destroyed by a fire in the same year. The church was extended in 1836. The sequence therefore comprises the original place of worship, the construction of the church in the second half of the 18th century and a later extension.
In nearby Somrabbi, the old cooperative dairy, “Casèl di Somrabbi,” has been converted into a museum of milk processing. Guided tours are available there; visiting arrangements may change. In Rabbi Fonti, a hamlet of Piazzola, there is a thermal facility with iron-rich, effervescent mineral waters. The facility’s operations may vary seasonally. In addition to trails and history, you can therefore include a museum and the subject of thermal waters in your plans, while bearing in mind that the two destinations offer different kinds of visits.
