Calavino: Frescoes, History and Waterways
Accommodation in Calavino
Calavino is surrounded by vineyards and orchards. Sacred art, historical community rules and paths along waterways offer different ways to connect with the village. You can focus your stay on culture or explore the landscape on foot and by mountain bike. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether you would like to discover Calavino primarily through its cultural history or its trails.
Frescoes and Community History
The Cappella del Rosario in the Church of San Floriano and Santa Maria Assunta is decorated with frescoes depicting the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. Another work in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta dates from 1549 and depicts ten members of the noble Madruzzo family. Here, you can encounter both a series of religious images and a dated family portrait.
The village’s appearance is shaped by Palazzo Negri di San Pietro, which overlooks Calavino. The Carta di Regola of Calavino also forms part of the history of communal life: this set of rules for community life was approved in 1493 and comprised 27 articles. Art, architecture and historical regulations thus offer different perspectives on the village.
The Roggia and Its Trails
The Roggia flows through Calavino, forming a series of waterfalls and small cascades. It empties into the Canevai Gorge and then into Lake Toblino. The Roggia di Calavino trail runs through the narrow Canevai Gorge between Dosfolòn and Casai.
The Anello Calavino–Lasino–Castel Madruzzo circular route is 8.6 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by mountain bike. The Tour della Valle dei Laghi road circuit is 64.8 kilometres long, rated moderate and listed as taking 4 hours and 25 minutes; it passes through Calavino. The five-day Cammino dei Sette Laghi includes the Masi di Calavino and the Roggia di Calavino. The 8.6 kilometres of the Anello and the five days of the Cammino represent different time and distance formats; the Tour della Valle dei Laghi also has a stated difficulty rating and duration. Check current route conditions before setting out.
Traditions and Local Products
The Palio dei Rioni includes a competition in which water is drawn from the fountain in the Piazzetta using old containers such as wooden buckets and barrels. The specific format may vary from one edition to another. The Molino Pisoni, in operation since 1870, still produces various types of flour. Grappa made in Calavino is also recommended as a local product to taste; individual producers and tastings may vary.
When planning your trip, the distinction is simple: the frescoes, Palazzo and Carta di Regola form a cultural and historical focus in the village, while the routes offer different time and distance options. Choose your hotel based on the focus you want for your stay.
