Kurtatsch An Der Weinstraße: Wine Trails, Farms and Culture
Accommodation in Kurtatsch An Der Weinstraße
Kurtatsch An Der Weinstraße lies on a sunny terrace 333 m above the Etsch Valley. Wine and local history shape several of the experiences described here; other highlights include walks through the cultural landscape, a trail through orchards and a climbing area. When planning your stay, you can choose from different focuses: historic buildings, wine-related experiences or outdoor activities.
Culture and local history
The Museum Of People Through Time® vividly presents how people lived in different eras, from the Stone Age to the modern age. Its broad historical scope offers a distinct focus alongside the village’s buildings and traces of its past.
The parish church of St. Vigilius was probably built in the 11th century; its bell tower is thought to have been constructed in the 14th century. The Church of St. Vigilius also houses a monstrance and a chalice from the late Gothic period. The tentative dates of the two construction phases and the named sacred objects offer different starting points for anyone interested in the church’s history.
Wine and directions
At the weekly guided tours of the Kurtatsch Winery, you can experience the TERROIR trail, take part in a guided tasting and discover the “dolomite” barrel cellar. If you would like to include a tour in your plans, check the booking arrangements before travelling.
The wine trail starts in the centre of Kurtatsch and follows the wooden “Saltner Pratze” marker. The South Wine Route also starts in the centre of the historic wine village of Kurtatsch. The village centre is therefore the shared starting point for the two named wine trails; the marker is an additional wayfinding aid for the wine trail.
The Kurtatsch–Entiklar–Margreid–Kurtinig wine trail can be reached from the Neumarkt and Margreid railway stations. Regular bus services towards the wine villages along the South Tyrolean Wine Road allow you to start at different points. If you plan your journey around these services, check the current timetable before travelling.
Walks, orchards and climbing
The Kurtatsch farmstead walk is a circular route through the historic wine village. QR codes on buildings explain local historical features. Along the way, the route passes historic residences and farms, as well as the vineyards above Kurtatsch. It then runs through the surrounding cultural landscape, with farm gardens and waterways, back to the village centre.
The Kurtatsch–Tramin Apple Trail is an easy themed hiking path through orchards. You can walk it from Kurtatsch to Tramin or in the opposite direction. Unlike the farmstead walk, which returns to the village centre, this trail runs between the two villages. Observe the access conditions on site.
If climbing is one of your interests, the Marderwand in Graun/Kurtatsch is another specific activity option. The climbing area has 80 m² of climbing surface and 36 routes ranging from 9 m to 21 m in length.
