Altrei: Experience hiking, nature and culture
Accommodation in Altrei
If you are looking for a hotel in Altrei, understanding the differences between the hiking trails, cultural sites and seasonal conditions described here can help you plan your excursions. The Altrei–Trudner Horn–Altrei hike is an out-and-back route; another trail leads from the village centre to Langen Moos and on to Krabes Alm. You can also explore local history and visit the Kneipp facility at Sandegg, which is closed during the winter months.
Hiking trails and nature
Anterivo is located in the Monte Corno Nature Park and is a hiking village certified at European level. Anterivo has diverse flora and fauna. Hikers will find different landmarks along the routes described here: on the hike to Trudner Horn, the outward and return legs to Altrei are part of the same route; the trail via Langen Moos, on the other hand, continues to Krabes Alm.
The Altrei–Trudner Horn–Altrei hike passes extensive larch meadows and quiet moors on its way to Horn Alm and Trudner Horn at an altitude of 1,710 metres. From Trudner Horn, you can see the Fleimstal Alps. On the way back to Altrei, you pass lime kilns and spruce and fir forests. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Another trail starts in the village centre of Altrei, at an altitude of 1,222 metres. Follow an old, paved path marked 5 across meadows and through the forest to Langen Moos at 1,452 metres. From there, take the forest road marked 9 to Krabes Alm at 1,540 metres.
A cycle route also connects Altrei with Horn Alm and Trudner Horn at an altitude of 1,710 metres. It climbs through the forest via the Ziss Pass to the alpine hut; the return ride to Altrei is a pleasant descent. Check conditions and access before setting out. The return journey is a key difference: on the hike, it leads back to Altrei, while the cycling route offers a pleasant descent.
The Kneipp facility at Sandegg is about a ten-minute walk from Altrei village centre via trail no. 3. The trail heads towards Trudner Horn. The facility is closed during the winter months; bear this seasonal restriction in mind when planning your visit.
Local history and legends
At the museum in Bishop Johannes Zwerger’s former home, furnishings, writings, pictures and documents illustrate his life and work. The old courthouse still stands at Gottschalkstraße No. 4. The two sites offer different ways to explore history: the museum focuses on records relating to an individual, while the courthouse is a surviving historic building.
Based on pottery finds and the name “Burgstall”, a prehistoric settlement or castle is thought to have stood on Burgstall Hill. This remains a conjecture; today, the hill is an attractive lookout for visitors. The Altrei Legends Trail offers a different way to explore local lore: this family-friendly walking and hiking route winds through the forests of Altrei and features legendary figures such as witches, Morelweibelen and mighty forest men.
Events and getting here
The annual Desmontegada brings the livestock into the village at around 12:30 p.m. The festival then begins in the square in front of the cultural centre. As the current schedule is not confirmed independently, check the event dates before visiting.
One travel option is to take the train from Bolzano railway station to Egna–Termeno railway station, then take bus route 144 to the “Zentrum” stop. Check the timetable before travelling so you can plan your journey using the latest connections.
