Neumarkt’s cultural history is shaped by its 500-metre-long arcades, a museum in a historic building and buildings dating back several centuries. There are also two routes with different starting points: the Mazoner walking trail in the centre of Egna and the Dürerweg near the Klösterle in St. Florian in Laag. This makes it possible to consider impressions of the town centre separately from ideas for excursions.

Arcades, Museum and Building History

Neumarkt’s picturesque arcades extend for 500 metres through Egna’s historic town centre. The Museum of Everyday Culture is housed in a historic building beneath the arcades. Its collection includes everyday objects, furniture, accessories, toys and written materials from the 19th and 20th centuries. The range spans everything from furniture and toys to written records, bringing different aspects of everyday life together.

At the parish church of St. Nicholas, several construction phases can be distinguished in different parts of the building. The Romanesque porch dates from the 12th century and was renovated in the 15th century; the tower was built in the 13th century. The choir is an outstanding example of Late Gothic architecture and was built by master stonemason Konrad von Neumarkt. These dates refer to the porch, tower and choir, offering a view of the church’s different historical layers.

The Ballhaus stands opposite the parish church. Dating from 1372, it served as a warehouse for the Etsch river shipping trade of the time. Alongside the history of the church, it highlights the building’s former role in the movement of goods. The old Klösterle hospice in Egna dates from the 12th century and was a stopping point for travellers and pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. Its history connects the town with journeys of the past.

The Vill monastery courtyard adds to the picture of the town’s historic buildings: this imposing, two-storey wine estate took on its present form in the 17th century and is considered one of the most beautiful wine estates in the region. Its description as a wine estate and the date of its present form give it a distinctive place alongside the museum, church and Ballhaus.

Routes with Different Starting Points

The Mazoner walking trail starts in the centre of Egna, on Fleimstaler Straße. It can be combined with a tasting of Mazoner Pinot Noir. Check locally in advance to confirm whether tastings are currently available. This way, you can plan the walk and wine tasting together without assuming that a particular option will be available locally.

The Dürerweg, by contrast, starts near the Klösterle in St. Florian in Laag. From Laag, it leads through Trudner Horn Nature Park to the Heiligensee, also known as Lago Santo. The difference between the two routes is clear from their starting points and described itineraries: the Mazoner walking trail starts in the centre of Egna, while the Dürerweg starts in Laag and continues through the nature park to the lake. If you are planning an excursion, this distinction offers a practical point of reference.

Arcade Festival and Weekly Market

The arcade festival is described as South Tyrol’s oldest village festival and takes place in Egna’s historic town centre. A weekly market is also held beneath the arcades in the historic town centre. The weekly market takes place there from 18 August 2026 to 20 July 2027; check the specific date for your visit. Both are tied to the town centre, but they offer different reasons to explore the arcades: the festival as a named event and the market as a regular offering during the stated period.
