In Kurtinig on the Wine Road, waterways, biotopes, vineyards and local history are among the specific themes of a stay. When choosing your destination, you can weigh these highlights against one another: Would you like to plan an easy hike, explore the history of water and the village, or take a church festival date into account?

Water and local history

The nickname “Little Venice” recalls an old, dense network of waterways, mill channels and irrigation ditches. This network shaped residents’ lives for centuries. Water is therefore part of not only the landscape but also the history of local life. A guided village tour in Kurtinig brings together history, water and local ways of life.

Biotopes and routes through the vineyards

Kurtinig has seven biotopes. Connected biotopes serve as places of refuge and rest for animals, as well as breeding grounds for plants. The Three-Village Trail, or 3D Trail for short, is an easy hike through vineyards from Entiklar to Kurtinig. The 3D Trail runs directly above one of Kurtinig’s biotopes. The Niclara–Cortina section of the 3D Trail is an easy walk that is also accessible by wheelchair.

Another route is called “Passo della Mendola e Passo delle Palade.” It starts in Cortina sulla Strada del Vino and leads through vineyards to Kaltern and Eppan. The destinations offer different highlights: the 3D Trail runs from Entiklar to Kurtinig, while the route over Mendola and Palade starts in Cortina and leads to Kaltern and Eppan.

Vines, history and events

Cortina sulla Strada del Vino is known as the “Village of Vines” because many house façades are covered with climbing vines. According to local tradition, vines are planted to mark the birth of a first child, the transfer of a farm, or the renovation of a house. This custom connects the visible village landscape with family and building milestones.

The parish church of St Martin in Cortina sulla Strada del Vino was built in 1462. The “Little Venice” guided tour ends with a tasting of a selected wine at a winery in Cortina sulla Strada del Vino. The traditional Martini church festival features a market and a goose run. Traditional goose dishes are served, refined with creative combinations and modern preparation methods. Unlike the water network that shaped the area over centuries, the year 1462 gives a specific historical date for the parish church.

If you plan to include a guided tour or the Martini church festival in your trip, check in advance whether tours are offered on your travel dates and when the festival takes place. Event details may change.
