Aldein between Bletterbach, mills and Stockwiesen
Accommodation in Aldein
Aldein offers several options for planning your trip: hikes through the Bletterbach Gorge, circular trails linked to mills, the Dinosaur Trail at the visitor center, and sacred art at the Museo Civico di Aldino. If you are looking for a hotel in Aldein, these destinations can help you decide whether to focus your stay on hiking, nature or culture.
Bletterbach and Stockwiesen
The GEOPARC Bletterbach is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guided hikes through the Bletterbach Gorge start at the Aldein visitor center and lead to the great waterfall. The program varies by season, so take the dates into account when planning and check them before your visit.
The Jochgrimm–Aldein stage offers a different perspective on the landscape. It crosses alpine pastures and wooded larch meadows known as “Stockwiesen.” Along the stage, these larch meadows and pastures are home to many rare orchids, pasque flowers and lady’s slippers. Anyone interested in plants and cultural landscapes will find a direct connection here between the route and the habitats along the way.
Hikes with different destinations
The Mill Hike is a family-friendly circular route through meadows and mixed forest. In 2026, the Aldein Museum Association offered a guided Mill Hike on Saturdays from July to September. The mills were opened and put into operation during the tour. This seasonal guided tour combines hiking with a visit to the mills; check the dates before your visit.
The Aldein Loop starts in the village center of Aldein and heads toward Thal, reaching the Mill Museum and the Maria Schnee Chapel. It therefore has different named stops from the Mill Hike. Another circular hike is the Great Aldein Alpine Pasture Loop: it runs from Schmiederalm to the alpine pastures of Schönrastalm, Neuhütt, Auerleger Alm and Lahneralm, then returns to the starting point. You can choose based on the destinations: mills, a museum and chapel, or several named alpine pastures.
Geological history at the visitor center
The Dinosaur Trail is a short circular route in Aldein that explores the Permian period, 260 million years ago. It is located at the GEOPARC Bletterbach visitor center, Lerch 40, 39040 Aldein. This places two different themes at the same named location: guided hikes through the Bletterbach Gorge and a circular trail focused on geological history. The Dinosaur Trail adds a clearly defined loop to the choice of routes without requiring a longer hike.
Sacred art at the Museo Civico di Aldino
The Museo Civico di Aldino houses the Thalhof Treasure, a collection of sacred works of art from the Baroque and Rococo periods. Paintings, coins, medals and portraits from private collections enhance the visit. This offers a cultural focus alongside the landscape and hiking trails. The collection brings together sacred works and other objects from private collections, providing a distinct reason to include the Museo Civico di Aldino in your travel plans.
Traveling by public transport
Aldein can be reached by train from Bolzano to Egna, followed by bus line 142 to the “Aldein, Kirche” stop. Check the timetables before traveling so you can plan your journey around the connection and the dates planned for your visit.
