Verschneid offers different perspectives on hiking and local history. The routes vary in their starting points, landscapes and destinations: one leads from the Gastrein car park to a mountain hut, while others pass through forests and meadows or across larch meadows. Family-friendly trails, a protected pond and historic churches round out the picture. You can tailor your trip to focus on outdoor activities, nature or culture.

Hiking and trails

Trail No. 12 leads from the Gastrein car park above Verschneid to the Gschnoferstall. Hikers can reach the mountain hut in about an hour. The route crosses the broad meadows of the Salten high plateau, fringed by larch forests. At the Gschnoferstall, you can sample traditional South Tyrolean dishes. Before setting out, check whether the hut is currently open.

Another hike starts in Frassineto and passes through the well-known larch meadows to the Gschnofer Stall, one of the mountain huts on the Salten. Several alpine pastures, mountain huts and surrounding villages are also within walking distance from Frassineto. The Salten rises behind Frassineto as a high plateau at 1,345 metres; in winter, you can enjoy numerous hikes through the snow there. As well as trails through larch meadows, winter hiking on the Salten is another possible focus for your trip.

The hike from Mölten to Verschneid follows a forest road through woodland and meadows. From Verschneid, hikers can take bus No. 204 back to Mölten. Check the current timetable before your hike to plan your return journey.

The Köfele Trail is a family experience with various places to play, climb and relax. The Mühlrad Trail leads to the mill wheel between Verschneid and Versein; there is a small playground along the way that is intended to represent an archaeological excavation site. When choosing between the trails, consider their different highlights: the Köfele Trail has several play, climbing and relaxation stations, while the Mühlrad Trail features the excavation-site display.

Nature and traces of history

At Tschaufer Weiher, past use and present-day protection come together: it was once an artificial fishpond and is now a protected nature area. In the Middle Ages, Tschaufen was the hunting lodge of the Lords of Maultasch. A burial mound dating from the Migration Period, between 300 and 500 AD, was discovered behind the house. The grave therefore dates from a much earlier period than the hunting lodge's medieval use.

The route from Terlan to Tschaufen passes through Verschneid. After the bridge, you can park your car in front of the barrier; from there, it is about a 40-minute walk to Tschaufenhaus. Check these directions and parking details again before your visit.

Churches and local traditions

The little church of St. Georgen stands on a hill steeped in history near Versein. The Church of San Biagio (St. Blasius) is located in the centre of Frassineto. It contains the striking Baroque fresco “The Feast of the Rich Epulon,” dating from 1621, and was first mentioned in a document in 1325. The dates refer to different milestones: 1325 is the church’s first documented mention, while 1621 is the year of the fresco. According to tradition, the Blessing of St. Blaise is given in Frassineto every year on 3 February.
