Laag: Churches, Klösterle and the Dürerweg
Accommodation in Laag
Explore Laag through its historic sacred buildings and the trails around Laghetti. Two specific interests can help you choose a destination: churches and the Klösterle as cultural and historical landmarks, and the Dürerweg for a hike. There are also options for cycling, including the cycle path along the Adige near Laghetti.
Churches and the Klösterle: history at different landmarks
The Church of San Lorenzo and the Fourteen Holy Helpers was consecrated in 1532. It is accessible to people with disabilities and well signposted; check the latest information before your visit. Not to be confused with it, the cemetery church of San Lorenzo is a late Gothic building from the 16th century. The parish church of Laghetti was built in 1941 and 1942 to a design by Trentino architect Renzo Masè. The triumphal arch features frescoes from 1944. They depict the Good Shepherd, the four Evangelists and the three martyrs of the Non Valley.
The Klösterle in Laghetti was founded in 1220 as a pilgrims’ hospice and is exceptionally well preserved. The small Church of San Floriano stands right next to it. It is Romanesque and ranks among the oldest churches in Tyrol; it was first mentioned in 1189. According to the historical account of the Dürerweg, Albrecht Dürer spent the night at the hospice of San Floriano in 1494. A flood in the Adige Valley forced him to take a detour on his way from Laghetti to Pochi. Thus, the Klösterle and San Floriano bring together architectural history and a historical connection to the Dürerweg.
The Dürerweg: a stage or a circular hike
The Dürerweg begins at the Klösterle in St. Florian/Laghetti. Trail No. 7 leads through the village to the Roman Bridge and on to Pochi. From there, the route continues through the Monte Corno Nature Park to Malga Sauch and Lago Santo. Along the way, it passes through vineyards, forests and pastures. The section from Laghetti di Egna to Pochi di Salorno is 4.4 kilometres long, climbs around 400 metres and takes approximately one hour and 40 minutes. Treat these figures as approximate guidance and check local trail conditions before setting out.
A shorter circular hike branches off shortly before Pochi. It goes via Garbe and then returns to Laghetti and the Klösterle on Trail No. 5. This gives you two different route options: the stage described to Pochi and the circular route back to the starting point. When planning, consider both the approximate duration and the stated elevation gain for the stage; check local conditions for either route.
Getting there and cycling
The starting point of the Dürerweg at the Klösterle can be reached by regional train to Egna-Termeno station, followed by regular bus services to Laghetti/San Floriano. Check connections and timetables before you depart. Public parking is available near the Klösterle of St. Florian and in the centre of Laghetti. Availability may vary on weekends and during the peak season.
For cyclists, the cycle path along the Adige runs between Egna and Salorno, near Laghetti. To the south, it continues to Trento and Rovereto and beyond. The Via Claudia Augusta connects Bolzano and Trento and is also recommended for cycling trips from Laghetti. These two cycling options complement the hiking and cultural landmarks as possible focal points when planning your trip.
