Off the northern coast of Sicily lies an archipelago whose volcanic landscape and long history of settlement shape the character of a trip. The Aeolian Islands comprise seven main islands: Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Stromboli, Panarea, Alicudi and Filicudi. When looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider which island and experiences you want to focus on during your trip. The museums and activities mentioned are each associated with specific locations.

Volcanic Landscapes and Choosing an Island

The Aeolian Islands are a particularly vivid example of how volcanic islands are formed and destroyed, and how volcanic processes continue. Lipari is the largest island in the archipelago, with a circumference of about 40 kilometres. On Lipari, Monte Chirica is the highest peak at 600 metres. From its viewpoint, you can see across the entire archipelago. These landmarks illustrate two different scales of the island landscape: Lipari’s size and the view of the island group as a whole.

Specific volcanic features are also part of the landscape. The Fanghi area is characterised by the intense smell of sulphurous emissions. Volcanic conditions can change and affect access, so check the local situation before visiting.

History on Lipari

The Museo Luigi Bernabò Brea is located in Castello di Lipari and occupies several restored historic buildings. Themed exhibition pavilions cover the settlements and civilisations of the Aeolian Islands, from prehistory to the early modern period. The museum on Lipari also displays almost 3,000 tombs from the necropolis. Visitors interested in the island’s history will find several different historical perspectives in one place.

Lipari Castle is a fortified citadel. Its present-day appearance is due to the imposing Spanish fortifications that Charles V had built around the fortress. At the same time, the site’s history goes back much further: settlements existed there as early as prehistoric times, with traces dating to the Neolithic, Copper and Bronze Ages. The fortress thus brings together early settlement and a later history of fortification.

Getting There and Connections

Lipari is connected year-round with Milazzo, Messina and Naples. In summer, connections with Palermo and Reggio Calabria are added. On the island, Marina Corta serves small boats, while Marina Lunga is used by ships and hydrofoils. Liberty Lines lists Messina and Milazzo as Sicilian hydrofoil ports and names nine stops in the Aeolian Islands, including Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli and Vulcano. As routes and seasonal connections can change, check the current timetables with the operator before travelling.

Boat Trips and Water Activities

Near Panarea, a boat excursion can bring you close to the five islets of Basiluzzo, Dattilo, Lisca Nera, Bottaro and Lisca Bianca. Whether a suitable trip is available depends on the operator. The nighttime eruptions of Stromboli can also be observed from a boat; conditions may change in line with the rules in force. For a specific trip, it is therefore worth checking local information in advance.

There are opportunities for diving and snorkelling in the Aeolian Islands. Near Filicudi, you can explore a large underwater archaeological area. If you plan to include this activity in your trip, check the local conditions. The names of the different islands can help you match the experiences you want to the relevant location.

A Culinary Stop in Lingua

In Lingua, a small fishing village south of Santa Marina, there are places to stop for ‘u pani cunzatu. The opportunity to try the dish depends on the individual establishment. This specific stop adds a culinary element to the archipelago’s landscapes, history and maritime character.
