Enna combines rich festival traditions, medieval architecture and protected landscapes. The Feast of Madonna della Visitazione, Castello di Lombardia and Lago di Pergusa represent different sides of this destination: religious customs, Swabian history and nature. If you choose Enna for a hotel stay, you can focus on the festival season, historic buildings or the landscape around the lake.

Festivals and Traditions

Celebrated every year on July 2, the Feast of Madonna della Visitazione begins with 101 cannon shots. In the procession, the Vara of the patron saint, the Nave d’Oro, is carried. Holy Week includes a traditional procession with 16 confraternities: from Palm Sunday until Wednesday morning, they make their way to the cathedral at one-hour intervals. In the Good Friday procession, around 2,500 hooded members of the confraternities carry the biers of the dead Jesus and Our Lady of Sorrows to the sounds of various funeral marches. The Museo delle Confraternite arranges its exhibition spaces around the theme of the five senses, assigning one sense to each room. The Museo del Mito presents myth in a contemporary form accessible to a wide audience and is considered Italy’s first fully multimedia museum. It is currently closed for renovations; check the latest status before visiting.

Swabian History and Sacred Art

The Torre di Federico II is considered one of Italy’s best-preserved Swabian monuments. During his stays in Sicily, Frederick II used the Torre as a summer residence. From its summit, you can see the Torre delle Aquile, Castello di Lombardia, the cathedral and Mount Etna. Frederick II of Swabia convened the first Sicilian parliament at Castello di Lombardia; the complex is also one of Italy’s largest medieval castles. Enna Cathedral has a basilica plan with three naves and a transept; Gothic and Aragonese architectural elements have been preserved. Five altarpieces dated to the 18th century are attributed to the Flemish painter Guglielmo Borremans. The historical references thus range from Swabian politics to various architectural styles and sacred art.

Rocca di Cerere and Lago di Pergusa

The landscape also has a rich cultural history. Rocca di Cerere lies on an almost isolated limestone peak that served as a sacred temenos of Demeter and Kore in classical times. A temenos is a sacred precinct; the term helps explain the peak’s religious significance in antiquity. Rocca di Cerere gave its name to a geopark that has been part of the European and global geopark networks since 2001. Lago di Pergusa adds an ecological dimension: the shallow, slightly brackish tectonic lake has neither inflows nor outflows. The Riserva Naturale Lago di Pergusa Nature Reserve covers 402.5 hectares in the municipality of Enna and is designated as the Natura 2000 site ZSC/ZPS ITA060002. It is an important stopover and wintering area for waterbirds, as well as a breeding site for the Sicilian rock partridge.
