Troina: Culture, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Troina
Troina brings together archaeological remains, art in historic buildings and landscapes. These varied points of interest can help guide your trip planning: consider whether you are especially interested in the city’s history, its museums, the rock-cut necropolis or the surrounding area. This can help you plan a hotel stay around the subjects you would like to explore in Troina.
Museums, Art and City History
The Antiquarium Archeologico of the city of Troina is housed in the monumental Torre Capitania complex. The MACTRO, the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea del Comune di Troina, focuses on a different area: it is housed in the rooms of the restored former 16th-century Carmelite convent. The museum opened to the public in July 2026. The archaeological collection and contemporary art are therefore each associated with a historic building.
The photographs in the “Fragments of War in Sicily” collection document battlefields, destruction, the suffering of civilians and residents’ daily lives in Sicily during the Second World War. The “Fragments of War in Sicily” collection comprises 62 valuable photographic prints made from original negatives, many of which have not previously been published. Its focus on wartime ranges from the effects of the fighting to the lives of local people.
The sacred buildings also preserve different aspects of Troina’s history. The Ex Cattedrale normanna – Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta preserves important examples of painting and sculpture from Troina. The Chiesa di San Silvestro was originally built by Basilian monks to house the monks of the Sant’Elia convent. The medieval fortified town of Troina was built on Hellenistic-era walls. Four gates and towers bear witness to its history in connection with the Norman conquest. Hellenistic fortifications and medieval buildings thus mark different layers of the city’s history.
Archaeology and Landscape
At Monte MuganĂ is a Castelluccian rock-cut necropolis dating from 2300 to 1700 BC. It consists of ten square chambers carved into the rock. The site combines a clearly defined archaeological date with a distinctive form: the chambers were hewn directly from the rock. The summit of Monte MuganĂ also offers views of Mount Etna, the Gulf of Augusta and Troina, weather permitting.
Lago Ancipa, also known as Lago Sartori, was formed by a dam on the Torrente Troina and lies within the municipal areas of Troina and Cesarò. Both names refer to the same lake. Another landscape feature is the Monte Acuto–Rocche di Cunnulio site, which spans the municipal areas of Cerami, Troina and Cesarò. It is considered a distinctive geological heritage site of the entire Sicilian mountain range. These two areas reflect different geographical contexts: Lago Ancipa is defined by the dam on the stream and its location within two municipal areas, while the Monte Acuto–Rocche di Cunnulio site is notable for its geological significance to the mountain range.
The medieval Ponte di Failla is also part of the historic surroundings. The watermill trail leads to this monument, which overlooks the surrounding landscape. In Troina, archaeological remains at Monte Muganà thus sit alongside buildings connected with the city’s history or with a route through the landscape.
Local Traditions and Cuisine
Vastedda cu sammucu is a traditional focaccia from Troina. It is filled with salami and local cheese and flavoured with elderflowers. It is also served at the annual Festino di San Silvestro, held between May and June. The Festino Troinese ehrt the patron saint San Silvestro da Troina and is considered the city’s most important and deeply rooted religious celebration. If you would like to plan your trip around the Festino, check the specific event dates.
Troina therefore offers several distinct points of interest to guide your trip planning: historic buildings and art, a rock-cut necropolis with a specific date range, geographical features, and a religious celebration with its own local speciality. You can choose your hotel based on which of these themes matters most to your stay.
