Assoro: History and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Assoro
Assoro brings together historic buildings and a striking mountain setting. Its architectural history ranges from a castle dating to the first half of the 13th century to later construction and furnishing dates in the 15th and 16th centuries. The former railway line offers a different focus for a stay. Whether you are looking at Assoro for its landscape, architecture, or an outdoor activity, you will find a range of starting points here.
Setting on Monte Stella
Assoro lies on Monte Stella in the Erei Mountains, on the mountain’s western slope at an altitude of 900 meters. The town offers an impressive view across the surrounding area. The western slope and elevation clarify its mountain setting, while the view across the area adds another landscape perspective to this description of its location. Assoro can therefore be explored both through its setting and its historic buildings.
Basilica di San Leone: Architectural Styles and History
A notable landmark in Assoro’s architectural history is the Basilica di San Leone. It combines elements of Gothic-Catalan, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. This combination of several periods in a single building is distinct from an individual dated architectural feature. One specific feature is a wooden coffered ceiling dating to 1490, considered an example of a Tecta Picta. In 1933, the Basilica was declared a national monument for its artistic beauty. The two dates should be distinguished: 1490 dates the ceiling, while 1933 marks the Basilica’s designation. The architectural styles, in turn, place the building in their respective periods.
Historic Buildings Compared
Palazzo Valguarnera was built in 1492 in an elegant Catalan style. Its year of construction and style are its defining points of reference. Badia di Santa Chiara was built in 1541, incorporating an existing early Christian site dedicated to Santa Sofia. In the case of the Badia, the construction date and the history of the site it incorporated belong to two different periods: 1541 dates its construction, while the site has an early Christian history. This distinguishes the Palazzo’s stylistic reference from the Badia’s older religious association.
Castello di Valguarnera takes us back to the first half of the 13th century and the Norman period; a few, but significant, ruins of the castle remain. Also in the 13th century, Chiesa dello Spirito Santo was built in honor of the Holy Spirit. The castle and its surviving ruins, and the church and its dedication, offer different ways to compare Assoro’s historic buildings.
An Outing Along the Former Railway Line
The former Dittaino–Assoro–Leonforte railway line was closed in 1961 and is now a scenic route for outings on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. This offers an outdoor activity alongside exploring historic buildings. If you are planning an outing along the route, check local conditions before setting off.
