Ragusa: Baroque, Museums and Trails
Accommodation in Ragusa
Ragusa combines Baroque urban history with archaeological collections and trails through natural and cultural landscapes. The city is one of eight cities in southeastern Sicily that together form the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto.” Ragusa’s entire historic centre is also part of the World Heritage Site. This offers different ways to plan your stay, with a focus on architecture, museums, historic trails or nature watching.
Baroque urban history and architecture
After an earthquake, a new urban centre arose in Ragusa alongside the ancient city centre. UNESCO recognition covers all of Ibla and large parts of the new town around the Church of San Giovanni. Ragusa is considered the highest expression of Sicilian Baroque. The city’s different districts provide a tangible setting for its architectural history.
A striking landmark is the Cathedral of San Giorgio, with its 43-metre-high neoclassical dome. The Museo del Duomo, right beside the cathedral, displays statues, stone fragments from the church destroyed in the 1693 earthquake, and other valuable relics. The building and its collection are thus clearly connected to the city’s history.
Archaeology and living heritage
The Museo Archeologico Ibleo is divided into six sections: Prehistory; Greeks and Kamarina; indigenous cultures; Hellenistic centres; Late Antique and Byzantine centres; and collections and acquisitions. The Kamarina section features faithful reconstructions of tombs. Another notable object is the limestone slab known as the “Guerriero di Castiglione.”
The Ecomuseo CARAT offers another way to discover the area. It presents intangible cultural heritage through traditions and memories, as well as production techniques and processes, folklore, literary works and folk songs. Here, culture encompasses not only buildings and objects, but also forms of expression passed down through generations.
Trails through history and nature
The Ecomuseo CARAT’s nature and archaeology trails are equipped with signs and information panels. They are considered easy to moderate and are suitable for individuals, groups and families. The trails are free and open year-round. Guided tours are led by authorised tour guides and must be booked.
The Madonna delle Grazie trail preserves broad mule steps. In the past, mules used them to carry grain from the plateau into the San Leonardo Valley. Along the trail are the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the municipal aqueduct and the 1837 cholera pit. These stops connect architectural landmarks with evidence of the area’s former use.
Another archaeological site is the Trabacche Hypogeum. Its two covered burial chambers mean it is dated to the mid-4th century AD. In an area now laid out as a city park in the historic centre, visitors can find valuable ancient evidence of the city’s earliest burial traces, including rock-cut tombs. As you descend towards Ragusa Ibla, the short trail known as the “Sentiero Belvedere” branches off with only gentle changes in elevation and offers a lovely view of Ragusa Ibla.
Nature reserve and scenic roads
The “Macchia forestale del Fiume Irminio” special nature reserve extends across the municipal areas of Ragusa and Scicli and covers about 130 hectares. It protects the coastal biocoenosis, dune vegetation and the Irminio River’s riparian ecosystem. Migratory birds use the area to rest and forage after crossing the Mediterranean.
Road routes also take in a variety of landscapes. One scenic route connects the SP 81, which branches off the SP 25 Ragusa Marina at Contrada Cimillà, with the SP 37 towards Camemi, before returning to the SP 25. The SP 80 passes through hills and valleys covered with carob trees on its way to Castello di Donnafugata.
Castello di Donnafugata is in the municipal area of Ragusa, about 15 kilometres from the city. This magnificent aristocratic residence dates from the late 19th century. Visitor attractions include the castle, the park and the Costume Museum. Its approximate distance from the city and the different attractions provide a practical guide if you would like to include this place in your plans as well as Ragusa.
You can shape your stay around different interests: UNESCO-listed architecture, museums and historic landmarks offer a cultural and historical perspective on Ragusa, while the CARAT trails and the Irminio reserve add nature and landscape to the experience.
