A prominent landmark in S'archittu is the natural arch by the sea. It is about 15 metres high, is considered a natural monument, and is the remnant of a former sea-erosion cave. The combination of coastal landform and geological history shapes the character of the area.

Natural Arch and Coastal Landscape

The arch consists of marine limestone, some of which is sandstone-like and dates from the Middle Miocene, about 15 to 11 million years ago. It was shaped by erosion from the sea and atmosphere in fossil-bearing detrital limestone. The fossil groups mentioned include echinids and bivalves—that is, sea urchins and mussels. The arch’s height, rock type and fossils offer different clues for appreciating the formation: it is a visible coastal landform and a record of the area’s geological development.

S'archittu lies within the Parco naturale del Sinis-Montiferru. Here, the volcanically shaped hills and mountains of Montiferru meet the flat sedimentary coast of Sinis. This contrast describes the landscape in which the natural arch lies, without equating the distinct landforms. Three mushroom-shaped islets, smoothed by the waves, complete the coastal scene.

Beach and Shore

Spiaggia Stella lies at the southern entrance to S'archittu. The long, narrow beach has pale, greyish-looking sand and pebbles. The large rock La Balena shelters Spiaggia Stella. Another tourist description of the beach at S'archittu mentions fine ochre-coloured sand with golden reflections and shell fragments; the seabed is also described there as shallow and sandy.

The natural arch and the three small islets are also among the described features of this coast. The area’s appeal is therefore not limited to the beach and water, but also includes the rock formations and the rocks smoothed by the waves. The arch’s geological history and the beach’s features offer different points of interest for a seaside stay.

Film History and Historic Surroundings

S'archittu has served as a film location, including for “2+5 missione Hydra” (1966). The area was also the setting for the opening scene of “Notte d'estate con profilo greco, occhi a mandorla e odore di basilico”. These two film references connect the coastal landscape with different works; the year of the 1966 film places it in a specific period.

The surrounding area offers another historical perspective: a small harbour near the ancient settlement of Cornus is documented as dating from the late Punic period to the early Middle Ages. This harbour is a distinct historical point of interest in the area around S'archittu. It adds a much earlier period to the film history, without conflating the two subjects.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

S'archittu can be reached via the Strada Statale 292 from Cuglieri towards Oristano. The paved seafront promenade at S'archittu is called Via degli Oleandri. From the holiday village, a paved path north of the houses leads directly on foot to the bay at S'archittu. These details distinguish the road journey, the promenade’s name and the described walking route to the bay.

The tourist amenities also include canoe and pedal-boat rentals. As these services may be seasonal or subject to change, check in advance whether rentals are available during your travel dates.

Consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay most.
