If you are looking for a hotel in Bortigali, you can choose your destination based on the focus of your trip: mountain scenery and trails, archaeological sites, or architectural and radio history. Bortigali is in the Province of Nuoro. Monte Santu Padre, the historic town center and the area’s radio history offer several different points of interest. This can help you first decide what you are most interested in during your stay.

Mountain scenery around Monte Santu Padre

Monte Santu Padre is a 1,025-meter-high volcanic mountain in the municipal area of Bortigali. Its flat summit and steeply terraced slopes shape the landscape. The area around the mountain lies within the Catena del Marghine e del Goceano Site of Community Importance (ITB011102), which is part of the Natura 2000 network. If you are making specific plans in the protected area, check its boundaries and management information separately.

The Sentiero Natura starts in Bortigali, climbs Monte Santu Padre and includes Nuraghe Orolo as a stop along the walking route. Check local trail conditions before setting out. Nuraghe Orolo stands at an elevation of 785 meters on a rocky outcrop at the foot of Monte Cuguruttu, overlooking the Tirso Valley and the entire Marghine region. The walking route described here therefore connects two named destinations, while the nuraghe’s location also highlights its landscape setting in relation to the valley and region.

The described driving route to Nuraghe Orolo follows the SS131 state road, exits at kilometer 149.5 toward the turnoff for the hamlet of Mulargia, and then continues along Provincial Road 62. Road conditions and signage may change; check them before driving. For a hike, the route and local trail conditions are the relevant things to plan for; for a drive, follow the road sequence described here.

Architecture, archaeology and history

Narrow cobbled streets and houses with Catalan-Aragonese portals and architraves shape the historic town center. There are 80 such portals and architraves in total. For travelers interested in architectural history, they offer a distinct focus alongside the archaeological sites.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli adds a specific work of art to this picture: the church contains four panels from a dismembered 16th-century altarpiece attributed to the Maestro di Ozieri. The panels and their art-historical attribution offer a different perspective on local history from the architecture of the historic center.

At the Carrarzu Iddia archaeological complex in Bortigali, the giants’ tomb is made of trachyte blocks; the burial chamber and monumental exedra in front of the entrance remain. A few dozen meters north of the complex is a dolmen with a rectangular burial chamber. The structures can be clearly distinguished: the giants’ tomb is characterized by its material and exedra, while the dolmen is notable for its rectangular chamber and its location north of the complex.

An active watermill is another of Bortigali’s distinctive features; the town is one of only a few in Italy with such a mill. If you would like to include it specifically in your travel plans, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

Another cultural point of interest lies in the countryside near Bolotana: there is a hamlet with about 50 muristenes around the church of Santa Maria de Sauccu. The church is venerated by the people of Bortigali. This adds a nearby connection to the veneration of the church to Bortigali’s own history.

Radio Sardegna is part of the more recent history. The station began broadcasting from Bortigali in the 1940s, after the end of the Second World War, and was considered Italy’s first independent radio station. Then check the details of each hotel offer against your travel plans.
