Sorgono brings together archaeological sites, a historic town centre and the landscape on the western slope of the Gennargentu. Biru ’e Concas is known for its Copper Age menhirs, Nuraghe Talei for its protonuraghe, and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta for its late Gothic architecture. The town is also home to a wood museum and Mandrolisai wine. You can tailor your visit to the town’s cultural and scenic attractions to suit your interests.

Menhirs and Nuraghe Talei

Biru ’e Concas is a Copper Age archaeological site in Sorgono. Around 200 menhirs are arranged there individually, in pairs, groups of three, rows and circles. The site can therefore be understood through two specific features: the approximate number of stones and their different groupings. The arrangements range from individual menhirs to rows and circles.

A different archaeological form takes centre stage at Nuraghe Talei. Its main building is an approximately elliptical protonuraghe with a corridor made of large granite blocks. By contrast, Biru ’e Concas is defined by its many menhirs and their arrangement, while Talei is characterised by the shape of its main building and its corridor. The two sites thus offer different archaeological points of interest, without requiring them to be considered examples of the same building form.

Nuraghe Talei can be reached via the SS 388 in the direction of the church of San Mauro. It stands on a small rise beside the road. Both the road connection and its position beside the road are useful details for finding your way if you plan to visit Talei.

Historic Town Centre and Culture

Sorgono’s historic centre preserves traces of Aragonese rule. Stone houses and narrow lanes shape the town centre and give it its architectural character. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the late Gothic style. The cultural themes here therefore range from the history of the rulers and residential buildings to a specific example of religious architecture.

The wood museum in Sorgono introduces visitors to the art of carving and engraving. It broadens the picture of local cultural life to include working with wood: alongside architectural heritage, traditional crafts also take centre stage. Visitors interested in architecture will find different points of connection from those who are especially interested in carving and engraving.

The Sa Tuvera festival is also part of the town’s cultural history. In 2026, the ancestral ritual in honour of Saint Anthony Abbot returned and ushered in Carnival in central Sardinia. That edition took place from 15 to 31 January 2026. These dates refer to a specific edition of the festival and provide a time reference if you are exploring the history of events in Sorgono.

Landscape and Mandrolisai

Sorgono lies on the western slope of the Gennargentu in central Sardinia. The town is surrounded by forests of conifers, holm oaks, downy oaks, chestnut trees and hazel bushes, as well as Mediterranean maquis. The varied vegetation ranges from different types of woodland to Mediterranean scrub and forms a distinctive part of the landscape.

If you would like to explore the wider area, you can start a tour of the Mandrolisai region by tourist train in Sorgono, at Piazza della Vittoria or LocalitĂ  Pranu. Check whether the tour is available before you travel. These two starting points are the practical details for planning; no information is available here about the distance between them.

Wine-growing also shapes the area around Sorgono: Cannonau, Monica and Bovale grapes are cultivated in its rolling hills and used to make Mandrolisai wine. This gives the wine its own regional connection, alongside the town’s archaeological and architectural attractions. When planning your visit, you can decide whether your main interests are prehistory, local history, crafts, or the landscape and culinary traditions of Mandrolisai.
