Orani brings together a range of themes for your stay, spanning art, religious history and industry. Costantino Nivola’s work has two specific connections to the town: the graffiti at the Church of Nostra Signora d’Itria and the “Orani ’58” photo exhibition in the historic centre. Other highlights include a former church in the Gothic-Aragonese style, a monumental pipe organ, an excursion to Monte Gonare and talc mining. This gives you the opportunity to explore art, architecture, landscape and local history as distinct themes.

Costantino Nivola and the year 1958

The Church of Nostra Signora d’Itria features graffiti created by Costantino Nivola in 1958. This is his only public work in Europe using the graffito technique. The artist, year and technique are closely connected, making the church a specific point of interest for art in Orani.

“Orani ’58” offers a different focus: 63 large-format photographs in the historic centre trace Nivola’s return to Orani in 1958. The shared year links the two subjects in time, but they tell different stories: one is about a work of art, the other about the artist’s return. This distinction helps separate Nivola’s artistic and biographical connections to Orani.

Churches, architectural history and the organ

The former Church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo (Torre Pisana) takes you back to an earlier phase of construction. It was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries in the Gothic-Aragonese style. The Church of San Giovanni Battista houses a monumental pipe organ made in 1732 by craftsmen from Campania. These dates offer different perspectives: on a period of construction, the craftsmanship behind an instrument and Nivola’s art of 1958.

Excursion to Monte Gonare

The Museo Nivola includes the excursion to Monte Gonare in its guided programme. The route passes through holm oaks, downy oaks and limestone rocks on its way to the summit; in places, it is cut into the rock. This landscape excursion provides a different focus alongside the art and architecture. If you would like to include it in your plans, check availability in advance, as it may vary.

Museo Nivola and the Delitala Collection

The Museo Nivola runs workshops for children and families; individual programmes may vary. Check which activities are scheduled for your visit. The museum café offers another reason to stop by: in collaboration with the Strada del Vino Cannonau association, it hosts tastings of selected wines from the region. As visitor offerings may change in practice, it is advisable to check in advance whether the tastings are currently taking place.

Visiting the Delitala Collection is subject to set conditions: admission is free, and visits are possible only by appointment at the stated times. Make an appointment with the Municipality of Orani at +39 366 4625022 or +39 348 6094727. Plan this stop only after arranging your appointment.

Talc mining as part of local history

Talc has been mined at the Sa Matta and San Francesco mines since 1917. The extraction of this raw material adds another local theme to the area’s art and religious history: rather than a single building or work of art, the focus here is an activity with a clearly established starting date.
