Mandas brings together archaeological themes, churches, monastic complexes, museums and links to the history of mobility. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore long archaeological periods, visit individual buildings or include exhibitions on everyday life and transport. Which themes you focus on depends on whether you are especially interested in archaeological collections, sacred architecture, ethnographic insights or the history of the automobile.

Archaeology in Mandas

The MAHMU displays more than 200 archaeological finds from the Mandas area. They were excavated and restored there. The museum presents everyday life over a period of more than 3,000 years, from the Nuragic protohistory to late antiquity. At the MAHMU, the study of material finds and a long-term perspective come together.

The Su Angiu archaeological complex in Mandas dates from the Nuragic, Punic and Roman periods. The wider Mandas area also contains more than 48 Nuragic ruins and contemporary settlements. The distinction between these themes is illuminating: the MAHMU presents everyday life over a long period, while Su Angiu, as a named complex, reflects three historical periods. The Nuragic ruins and settlements also provide a broader territorial context.

Churches, Monastery and Homes

The parish church of San Giacomo Apostolo Maggiore was built between 1585 and 1605 in the Catalan Gothic style. Its date and style provide a concrete point of reference if you want to classify buildings by period and architecture. The church of Sant'Antonio Abate was built over existing Roman structures.

The Is Lollas de is Aiaius museum complex includes a medieval ensemble dating from the 12th century. It was built over the Roman paving of the road from Karalis to the Barbagie and is dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great. The Is Lollas de is Aiaius ethnographic museum offers visitors access to simple homes that have been inhabited by the Marongiu and Landis families since the 18th century. Both a medieval architectural ensemble and historic homes are therefore at the heart of the visit.

Since 2008, the former monastery and church of San Francesco have housed the Emilio Pisano municipal library, the Mandas historical archive and the TitoluS media library on Sardinian feudalism. The Peregrinatio Fidei Museum of Sacred Art is located in a 17th-century architectural complex that developed around the monastery of the Observant Friars Minor. These places offer different perspectives on local history, from religious architecture to the library, archive and media resources on Sardinian feudalism.

Mobility and Other Historical Periods

MAMES presents a tour of the arrival of the automobile in Sardinia and the development of mobility in the 20th century. It is a vintage car museum and is described as the first museum of its kind in Sardinia. The history of transport thus complements the archaeological and church-related themes with a much later historical focus.

Acquabona Park includes a spring dating from the Middle Ages. The Trenino Verde is another point of interest when planning your trip: it departs from Mandas station at Largo Lawrence. The station is one of the largest on the line. Check the current operating arrangements before travelling.
