Villasalto: Mining History, Trails and Views
Accommodation in Villasalto
Villasalto can be explored through its mining history, varied trails and viewpoints. When planning your trip, some specific differences are worth noting: the Sentiero dei Minatori follows a mule track from the mine to Armungia, the trail to Caboni has a specified distance and walking time, and Monte Gènis offers sweeping views across several regions. The Santuario di Santa Barbara also reveals another side of the town.
Mining history and life in Su Suergiu
The Miniera di Su Suergiu operated between the 19th and 20th centuries and was one of Europeâs most important centres of antimony production for decades. The site includes an Art Nouveau-style directorâs building, a foundry, tunnels, furnaces and workersâ houses. Together, these features form a valuable industrial heritage site: the complex includes both technical facilities and buildings associated with the workersâ lives.
The Museo Archeologico Industriale âSu Sergiuâ is housed in one of the buildings in the complex, which consists of several buildings. Materials and equipment are displayed there, also illustrating the lives of the miners. The mineâs physical remains are thus complemented by an exhibition that focuses on the people and their everyday working lives.
The Villaggio Minerario di Su Suergiu connects Villasaltoâs industrial and social history with the green valley of the Rio Sessini. Those interested in mining history will therefore find not only individual technical features here, but also a place where the townâs industrial development and social life come together.
Trails with different route characteristics
The Sentiero dei Minatori connects the Miniera di Su Suergiu with Armungia and follows a mule track. The route takes about 40 minutes. It runs along old paths between gardens and vineyards, with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The trail therefore links its two destinations along a route shaped by cultivated land.
Other trails each have their own character. The Miniera Su SuergiuâPunta Pardu trail (C 401) passes through a habitat rich in flora and fauna and offers views of the valley below. The VillasaltoâCaboni trail (C 402) starts in the âsa Mitza âe Caboniâ district and descends to the spring known as Caboni. It is described as easy to walk, 800 metres long and taking 15 minutes.
The stated times offer a specific comparison: the Sentiero dei Minatori takes about 40 minutes, while the 800-metre trail to Caboni takes 15 minutes. The first connects two named places along a mule track; the second is a shorter route described as easy to walk, with the spring as its destination. This makes it possible to distinguish the trails by their routes and stated characteristics, without treating them as equivalent hikes.
Monte Gènis, valley views and springs
The Vedetta panoramica di Monte Gènis is located 880 metres above sea level. From there, views extend across the entire Gerrei, Sarcidano and Barbagia di Seulo. The viewpoint can be reached via a connecting trail along the Si-CAI Z26 ridge, also known as C-400-A. While C 401 offers views of the valley below, the panorama from Monte Gènis takes in several named landscape areas.
Abundant springs are also among Villasaltoâs noted natural features: the Villasalto forestry unit has a high number of these springs throughout the year. Together with the trails between gardens and vineyards, the habitat along C 401 and the sweeping panorama from Monte Gènis, they create a varied picture of the landscape, while the individual trails remain distinct from one another.
The Santuario di Santa Barbara
The Santuario di Santa Barbara adds the townâs religious history to its mining and landscape themes. On 5 April 2015, Arrigo Miglio, Metropolitan Archbishop of Cagliari, elevated the sanctuary to the status of a pilgrimage church. It has been held in special veneration for centuries. For the feast held on the first Sunday, Monday or Tuesday in June, worshippers come to Villasalto from Gerrei, Trexenta, Marmilla, Campidano, Sarrabus, Barbagia, Goceano, Logudoro and Ogliastra. The feast thus connects the town to a religious tradition that extends beyond Villasalto.
