Vallermosa: Matzanni, Landscape and Tradition
Accommodation in Vallermosa
Vallermosa offers several points of interest for planning a trip: archaeological remains, recurring events and a landscape with distinct elevation zones. If you’re looking for hotels in Vallermosa, you can first consider whether you want your travel dates to coincide with a festival or whether historical sites and nature are of greater interest to you.
Archaeology and Historic Sites
The sacred site of Matzanni dates from 1300 to 730 BC and spans the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. It consists of three well temples and a small village of huts. Archaeological finds from the three temples include columns, betyl stones and altars. Both the dating and the components of the complex are central to the site.
The monuments are accessible on foot from a large open area; they are enclosed within a recently built wall. Check local conditions before visiting. The Punic temple of Genna Cantoni is located near the sacred site. The Chiesa di San Lucifero is also of historical interest: its marble main altar dates from 1740. Roman baths are located beside the rural church of Santa Maria.
Events and Is Morettus
Sapori d’Autunno, also known as “Domus e Pratzas,” takes place every year over two days. The event brings together traditions, food and wine, crafts, art, traditional trades, music and tours of the area. Dates and the program change each year. During the festival, visitors can taste Is Morettus and watch it being prepared. Is Morettus is a traditional agricultural food product recognized by the Region of Sardinia.
At the Palio delle Botti, numerous teams from different towns roll barrels along a route lined with spectators on Sunday afternoon. The competition takes place annually; participation and format may vary. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the information for the relevant edition and plan around the current dates.
Landscape of the Linas Massif
Vallermosa lies at the foot of the Linas Massif, between Campidano and Sulcis-Iglesiente. In the surrounding area, cultivated plains give way to Mediterranean scrub at higher elevations. Mastic shrubs, myrtle, strawberry trees and rockroses grow there. Higher up, forests of centuries-old holm oaks and cork oaks shape the landscape. In some reforested areas, pines and eucalyptus trees also grow alongside the native vegetation.
The Linas Massif provides woodland habitat for wild boar, foxes and weasels. Buzzards and kestrels may be seen in the sky; with a little luck, golden eagles can occasionally be spotted. Several trails lead to higher peaks and pass through Mediterranean scrub. Conditions on individual trails may vary.
CEAS Vallermosa organizes creative workshops, nature trails and awareness initiatives on topics such as biodiversity conservation, climate change and sustainable resource management. Activities may vary. These topics broaden the perspective on Vallermosa to include questions of nature conservation and resource use.
