Porto Tramatzu: Beach and Coastal Landscape
Accommodation in Porto Tramatzu
Porto Tramatzu draws the eye to a long sandy coastline surrounded by Mediterranean maquis. The sandy beach is about 1,260 metres long and lies at the far end of a bay, north of the Punta Su Tramatzu headland. Its very fine sand has golden highlights.
Beach and seaside activities
The regional bathing water overview for 2024 listed Porto Tramatzu as an official bathing water under the name PORTO TRAMATZU. Stabilimento Balneare Vela Sport is located at LocalitĂ Porto Tramatzu, 09040 Villaputzu (CA); check whether it is open before your visit, as operating status and seasonal availability may vary. The beach is associated with windsurfing; whether conditions are suitable depends on the wind and sea state. Porto Tramatzu is also considered a suitable destination for diving. The beach and sea are therefore central to the area, while other nature and cultural attractions are located within the municipality of Villaputzu.
Nature in the municipality of Villaputzu
After crossing the coastal alluvial plain, the Flumendosa reaches the sea in the Villaputzu area. At its mouth, the river forms an ecologically valuable wetland system. The Villaputzu wetland system is well suited to birdwatching and long walks. Pardu Mareus is also among Villaputzu’s wetland ecosystems designated as Sites of Community Importance (SCIs). This wetland landscape adds another nature theme within the municipality to Porto Tramatzu’s coastal character.
Mining history and historic buildings
Within the municipality of Villaputzu, Baccu Locci is an example of classic early 20th-century mining architecture in Sardinia. The mining complex operated until 1965 for the extraction of arsenopyrite and comprises around thirty historic buildings. For travellers interested in architecture and mining history, this is quite different from the beach: here, the former ore extraction and historic building complex shape the area’s character.
The route to the mining village follows the SS 125. Near the Corr’e Cerbu bridge, an unpaved road branches off at kilometre 82 and follows the stream inland; after about 10 kilometres, you reach Baccu Locci. Check the current road conditions before setting out, as they can change.
The ruins of the medieval castle of the same name stand on Monte del Castello di Quirra, between the Altopiano di Cardiga and the sea. A coastal tower, whose construction began in 1592, has been restored and opened to the public by the municipality; it offers panoramic views of the entire coastline. Check before visiting whether it is currently accessible. Together, these sites represent different historical forms: the remains of a medieval castle and a restored coastal tower complement the mining architecture of Baccu Locci.
Food and maritime orientation
Villaputzu’s cuisine includes spit-roasted porceddu, served on cork trays and covered with myrtle leaves. For boating enthusiasts, the Marina di Villaputzu is another point of reference: it has around 400 berths for boats up to 30 metres long. As operational details may change, check the current capacity if you plan to make your travel arrangements based on it.
