Soleminis: Church Art, Everyday Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Soleminis
Soleminis lies in a hilly area of Campidano di Cagliari, bordering the last mountain foothills of Serpeddì. Church art, everyday culture and nature offer different themes for planning a trip: the parish church of San Giacomo and its artworks reflect several historical periods, Casa Corda Spada houses an ethnographic collection, and the Campidano State Forest showcases the landscape and wildlife. You can tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most.
Landscape and Wildlife
The Campidano State Forest extends across the territory of four municipalities, including Soleminis. Its wildlife includes the Sardinian hare, partridges, quail and foxes. Sardinian wild boar are found only in the denser areas. This qualification is important when considering the forest’s wildlife: the reference to wild boar applies to the denser areas, not to the forest as a whole. The Campidano State Forest can be reached from Soleminis via a road about five kilometres long, which is partly paved. Check the road’s current condition before travelling to the forest.
Church and Art History
The parish church of San Giacomo stands in Sedd'e Cresia, at the edge of the present-day municipal boundary. It dates from the 17th century and may have been built over a medieval predecessor. Inside the church is a painting of the Trinity and the Holy Family from the late 16th century, originating from a workshop in Stampace. The painting therefore belongs to an earlier period than the church building. The statue of San Giacomo il Maggiore in Soleminis is a painted wooden work dating from 1700 to 1749, attributed to the workshop of Giuseppe Antonio Lonis. The painting from the late 16th century predates the 17th-century church building; the statue belongs to a later period. This makes it possible to distinguish the three artworks and buildings chronologically.
Collection and Local Products
Casa Corda Spada is a cultural centre with an ethnographic collection, as well as furniture, everyday objects and artefacts from island life. Its holdings draw attention to everyday objects, complementing the religious art history of San Giacomo with a different cultural theme. The Mont'Arrubiu Centre is an information and documentation centre with a multimedia room for educational activities. In contrast to the ethnographic collection, the focus here is on the connection between information, documentation and educational activities.
Bread is one of Soleminis’s typical local products, adding a culinary perspective to its cultural themes. For planning your trip, you can distinguish between several areas of interest: the church and its artworks offer historical context, Casa Corda Spada focuses on everyday objects, and the state forest offers a connection with nature. If you are looking for hotels in Soleminis, these distinctions can help you decide on the focus of your stay.
